Sparrow 1.2 first look: A lot to like and a few minor gripes

May 26th 2011 2:23PM (TUAW.com)
Does it still add millions of little files that take up more space than is reasonable and force Time Machine to run an inordinate amount?

Ask TUAW: iPad browser refreshing, iPhone headphones, laptop upgrades and more

Apr 13th 2011 11:47PM (TUAW.com)
I can second this with Atomic Browser, it's not the be-all end-all of iPad web browsers but I have to say it really solves that problem at least. A side effect is that it will eventually completely run out of RAM and just crash if you keep opening tab after tab. But it performs solidly with a sensible amount of tabs and really does solve that Google Reader problem.

Farewell, Internet

Sorry to see you guys go. Of all our sites, you were one of the few I read regularly. There really won't be any replacement.

World Backup Day: Mozy app puts backed-up files at your fingertips

Mar 31st 2011 3:36PM (TUAW.com)
I use Mozy, have for a long time, and it's been pretty nice, always improving... but one caveat. It just doesn't want to back up my external. That's a big caveat of course, and if they fixed it I'd be ok but if I have to do things manually then I'm just going to move to Amazon.

ScanDrop comes to Mac: makes scanning to cloud services simple

Mar 26th 2011 8:48PM (TUAW.com)
What does this offer me over just using Image Capture and scanning to a folder that I have Evernote set to watch? I've been doing this for quite a while and it's worked pretty well for me.

20+ essential apps for new Mac users

Jan 27th 2011 3:30PM (Download Squad)
It's kind of a crap situation that you even need it, but I've found AppZapper to be pretty essential, one of the things that I install right away on a new Mac.

Kindle app now supports Project Gutenberg eBooks

Jan 12th 2011 11:27AM (TUAW.com)
This is a great feature for hardware Kindle users, but for iOS folks, Stanza is IMO much better for grabbing free books. It has more display/style options, more sources to get books from, and reads pretty much any format. It's what I've always used for Gutenberg stuff.

My favorites are the old pulpy horror guys like Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard.

VLC for iPhone and iPad get pulled from the App Store

Jan 10th 2011 12:46PM (Download Squad)
To me it seems like the people who ported VLC disrespected the GPL by even putting it in the App Store, and I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. So... IMO no big loss philosophically. And ultimately, it didn't work worth a crap anyway, so I can't say it's a big loss functionally either. For anyone who wants to watch videos on the iPad/iPhone, I do recommend oPlayer, it works pretty well. Not free, but there's an ad-supported free version.

iControlBits for iOS lets you manage your Transmission torrents

Jan 3rd 2011 12:04PM (Download Squad)
I've managed to get by just fine up to now with Transmission's web controller, which works well on mobile Safari.

How to read CBR/CBZ comics on an iPhone -- for free!

Aug 17th 2010 6:33PM (Download Squad)
Yeah I have been using this combo for a while, works really well. Ever since Dropbox added support for other apps (CloudReaders was one of the first) it's become kind of like a filesystem for the iPad.
