Okay, technically and mathematically 3-for-2 is 2-for-1, but does that mean that if you go to the checkout of Toys 'R Us (either brick and mortar or website) and purchased two games they'd give you one free?
I'm kinda thinkin' no. I'm kinda thinkin' you have to buy two to get the third.
And mathematically, 2-for-1 would mean that if you bought four games you'd get two free. With a 3-for-2 deal, you wouldn't need to buy that fourth game to get the deal. So techincally, 3-for-2 is a BETTER deal than 2-for-1.
1. Number bump wasn't because of new users or because of free sub, it was people who had RECENTLY left the game or were considering leaving but held off until after the expansion hoping it would get fun again ("free" sub means nothing. Remember: the expansion wasn't cheap to buy in the first place. Not many casual "returnees" would drop that money on an expansion they were bored with in the first place).
2. I agree the drop off is partially due to summertime.
3. Summertime drop isn't as much as you'd think, since there are more students on summer break, therefore more playing time available to the demographic-average player. The drop off is genuine, in my mind. There's a great level of boredom in WoW for the casual player, since most of expansion focuses on end-game raid instances. Yes, they are 10-man and 25-man instances, but they are so hard that the casual PUG 10- or 25-man group can't get through them. It was a bad call on Blizzard's part. The 5-mans are too easy and the 10- and 25-mans are too hard. This is, IMHO, the optimal moment for a new MMO to come in and kill WoW, the way WoW killed Everquest.
What I find kind of surprising about the commentary to this accident is focussing on what a dumbass this guy was for wrecking an expensive car.
Dudes.... He was racing in excess of 120mph on public freakin' streets. Okay, so an Enzo is built for high-speed collisions... but Hondas and VWs and Subarus and Pontiacs aren't. This guy is a dumbass extrordinaire -- but not for wrecking his $1 million ride but for doing something so unbelieveably dangerous to EVERY OTHER PERSON ON THE ROAD!!!
It's completely demonstrative with the self-absorbed, selfish nature of a guy who would rip off investors and everyone else at Gizmodo. If it wasn't enough to know that he trashed a company for his own greedy materialistic, juvenile needs, then this crash might convince you.
People with this little regard for anyone else but themselves and their immediate IDs should rot in jail. Just short of 1st degree murder what he did-- he just got lucky that he didn't actually end up killing someone else.

Vulgarity, Halo 2, and you
Feb 9th 2006 6:19PM (Joystiq)But just for the record re: your graphic.
It's "pwn" not "pown." In the MMO world, "pown" would be just downright silly.
