Sony says PSN 'intrusion' compromised personal info; hopes to have 'some services' back 'within a week'

Apr 27th 2011 10:37AM (Joystiq)
I am really surprised how many people are trivializing this with comments like "Get a new credit card...get over it, and move on." Even worse are the comments like "What do you expect from a free service?"

Whether you're an xbox fanboy, ps3 fanboy, whatever...it really doesn't matter right now. This is a huge deal no matter what company(s) are involved. Even if charges are made and you get refunded your money, it can take a long time and a series of infuriating phone calls to get your credit score reinstated.

Those who are trivializing this either don't live in the real world or don't care about their credit. Then again, maybe they just don't really get it since their parents' credit cards are linked to their accounts.

Rumor: 'Rebug' custom firmware enabled 'free' PSN downloads, forced Sony's network shutdown

Unfortunately, this guy's writeup is purely speculation. Here's an addendum he wrote:

Edit #3: Ok, it looks like some various news sites have picked up this story and taken it out of context. Once again, this is all speculation and information gathered from various devs in the PS3 scene. It might very well not be the real reason PSN is down, but as the timeline fits, it's a reasonable explanation. Now, as to Rebug directly allowing this to happen, that's not the case at all. Different CFW's have had access to the dev network the whole time. This is not new news for people in the PS3 scene. It's what people have figured out what to do with the said network that has caused all the recent issues. Saying that Rebug is what did this is like saying a gun manufacturer is responsible for every death that happens with a gun.

Tl;dr - He's speculating that due to Rebug's timeline, it has something to do with Rebug, but it's actually do to a bunch of other things.

Rumor: 'Rebug' custom firmware enabled 'free' PSN downloads, forced Sony's network shutdown

@copa I totally agree with what you said. I don't necessarily see why Sony would see it prudent to shut down PSN simply because users were "stealing" content. Nor would I consider downloading content with a hacked console an "external intrusion" per se. To me, an external intrusion indicates that unauthorized users were able to access internal PSN data such as user accounts, credit card information, etc. Sony wouldn't shut down an entire network of millions of users because they found out a few bad apples were stealing content. They would, however, shut down the network if they felt there was a possibility that users' personal info was in jeopardy.

Best Buy is your Portal 2 savings

@Jason B Plus, you can apply the credit to other games that have the $20 credit. I've been buying new games with release date free shipping and no tax for $40 or less for years by bouncing the $20 credit from game to game.

PlayStation Network issues persist as hacker collective continues attacks

"Gamers everywhere need to speak out against this, not for Sony's sake, but because these people claim to act on our behalf and I don't want anyone out there thinking that I even remotely support what they're doing."

I was trudging through this thread gawking at all the immaturity and mudslinginging, and lo and behold, I stumble across your quote that hits the nail right on the head. +1

The worst part is that Apple employees were not allowed to tell customers how many they had.

I recently dug out the old SNES. This weekend I'll be finishing the Chrono Trigger game I started fifteen years ago.

Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure announced, incorporates augmented reality

@grossgreg Wow - my first visit to the world of oblivion. I gotta say, I had no idea that the Spyro trilogy had such a following. I sort of skipped over the games in my PS1 days, so maybe I should dust off the old console and dig up some copies of the games. I have a lot of respect for a franchise that is good enough to gain such a passionate following.

I dig Spyro's new look. Less cuddly, more menacing.
