Dec 14th 2009 7:56PM (Joystiq)Why Apple's iPhone competitors just don't get it...yet
Feb 3rd 2007 1:57PM (BloggingStocks)Technology is becoming a lot like cars are now. Think about it. Most cars are essentially the same. Small differences in performance, small differences in use of technology. But they all essentially do the same exact thing -- haul you and your stuff around, while playing you some tunes. So, what makes one car a better buy than another one? Simple: the User Interface. You know - all that stuff you touch. The seats, the steering wheel, the gauges you look at. And there are people who are willing to pay for a great UI.
OK, it's true that a BMW is a much higher quality car than a Hyundai. That's a fact. But it's also a fact that at the basic level they do exactly the same thing. Haul you around.
The iPhone will be the BMW for a while. But just like with BMW, slowly those features will be adapted and brought into the marketplace by other manufacturers.
The analysts who say the iPhone isn't revolutionary are missing the point in exactly the same way as if people were criticizing the new BMW. "Oh, it doesn't bring anything new to the market. It's all being done already. My car can drive. I have a radio. I have leather seats."
Fine. You're right. Your Plymouth can do all those things, but the experience won't be the same as the BMW. Bottom line. And when the technology gets to the point where it's all essentially the same, what are we paying for? A better experience of that technology.
