Don't count out Sony unless they loose Final Fantasy 13 as an exclusive. That is the 800lb gorilla (or rather the last big ape Sony has) Most gamers I know in the real world would like [a PS3], but not until the price comes down to say an Xbox 360 level and some games come out. Say early 2008. These same people are not impressed with nor are planning to buy the Wii either. People are waiting on the PS3, not dumping it. The problem for Sony is by time the PS3 price comes down the 360 price will drop as well, and with 75% of the same games.
Game consoles are not like movie box-office, success isn't decided the month it comes out. (thankfully) The 2600 didn't take off until nearly 3 years after it launch, same with the NES, PS1 took a couple years before it got a killer app (FF7), even the PS2 took a solid year to kill off the Dreamcast. But by the end of 2007 we'll have a pretty good picture, and I think it's gonna be 36DS for the win.
Talk about Wii-novation all you want, but beyond the same tired Nintendo franchises it doesn't have any of the popular top games. THAT sells consoles, not a magical power glove wand. FF>Zelda EOM
Here's the usual hypocrisy with game consoles, especially incremental improvements - if Nintendo does it it's ok, if Microsoft does, it's evil. Yes it's too bad the 360 didn't have HDMI or a bigger hard drive, but there's nothing wrong with it. It was fine at the time (unlike an unexcusably non-backlit Gameboy in 2001) As for someone like me, this is a great reason to wait til Fall 07 to get a 360. I must also end my comment by saying I think it's 36DS for the win, not Wii60. I want a real console and a real portable, not a real console and a fake console.
It's pretty obvious now that the 360 is going to clean up in 2007. Halo 3, a cheaper Grand Theft Auto, maybe Metal Gear Solid. Couple that with a upcoming price drop, probably HDMI included, bigger hard drive and maybe even built-in wi-fi and it's a no-brainer.
PS3 will pick up once the price comes down, but I believe 360 will stay ahead. As for the Wii, I don't enjoy playing games by waving my arms (and yes I've played one for many hours and it gets old fast) and the graphics aren't just the worst of the 3, they're a full generation behind. Like getting a Colecovision instead of a NES in 1988. Yes Nintendo fans want to knock Sony off the throne and keep MS from getting another market, but at least those companies are selling actual next-gen units. Buying an inferior yet incredibly overrated system to help a [multi-billion dollar profiting] "underdog" is kind of pointless.
Beyond Zelda and Wii Sports most of the games aren't rated very well and cross-platform titles generally have the worst ratings on Wii because of graphics, no online and wanky control. You want to support Nintendo? Buy a DS. I have one, but for consoles, it's gonna be 360. 36DS FTW. There, a new term.
I used to be a console FPS fan (Goldeneye/Pefect Dark) but have not been able to play console FPS since I started WASDing on PC in 2001. That said, as an example, Call of Duty 3 on the Wii is a CHORE to play, moving the pointer is like playing an FPS mixed with that old "Operation" game. It's like shooting a real gun with it duct-taped to your face. Whereas I had a lot of fun with the "standard" console-control FPS Resistance: Fall of Man on the PS3. Played that all the way through on co-op, but had to force myself to play COD Wii for a few hours just to feel I'd got my money's worth on the rental.
Wii is great for non-gamers, die-hard Sony/MS haters and parties (Wii Sports IS fun in spurts) As a real system... no thanks. News flash - Nintendo is just as big and "evil" of a corporation as MS or Sony, no need to shower them with "underdog love"
Say, I'm posting this from a 2002 model computer. If anyone would like to buy it from me for 2006 prices (if I attach a mercury switch to the mouse) let me know.
What we really need is that Infinium Labs lapboard for 360/PS3.
A guy at Circuit City told me yesterday he had a guy return a PS3 that day. It's not that the system sucks (it's gonna outlive the already outdated Wii) but there's probably a lot of wives out there demanding their husbands return something that's a big chunk of a mortgage payment. Every Sony launch has sucked, I remember playing a PS2 for a couple hours in Nov. 2000 then promptly going back to the N64. Didn't stop them from selling a ton of units a year later when GTA, FF and GT came out.
You know, I took a Wii home at Christmas and my parents played it said "I want one" but that's a far cry from them actually going and buying one. Mom got tired of it (literally) after a while and said "eh, I don't need one" Other than the internet I don't know any real gamers that have played the Wii and thought it's OMG Awesome! Mostly "interesting for a while, a party system" Granted we're all 28+, maybe that has something to do with it.
I hope Xbox wins. I don't want to wave my arms and look at 2002 graphics for the next 5 years. Joystiq, why not do an article about the 360's HD-DVD drive, which seems to be doing "really well"? VS Blu-Ray. Or something... "Joystiq" as a title seems system agnostic... but you've become "Wii Fanboy"
I suspect this explains part of the Wii shortage, I mean, they're nowhere near 4 million shipped by the year's end.
Assuming a lot of these people actually bought it for Christmas and the kids won't play it til then, there could be a deluge of Wii-mote violence that day.
Can the PS3 be saved?
Jan 18th 2007 12:24PM (Joystiq)2 years can pass before the PS3 price comes down, and it'll still be a modern system that attracts people. The Wii will only get more outdated.
DVD players and VCR's used to cost $600 too.
Enough talk, have at this Castlevania XBLA video

PC World: Office 2007 beats Wii as "most innovative" product
