There's a turtle fossil on the next screen for reference, so there IS a picture in-game of exactly what it's supposed to look like. The problem is, no one remembers that the fossil is there by the time they need it.
According to an interview with Corey Marshall, the voice actor for the English version of Shenmue, he answered a wanted ad that was posted on his college bulletin board. Other "actors" were taken from a nearby military base and whoever they could find in Japan that spoke English.
The problem isn't simply a lack of caring on the developers' part. Most of the time when they DO try to have strong relationships in a game, the attempt falls flat on its face and becomes, frankly, laughable.
You know what, the next time I have to explain what defragging is, something like this would be a good example to use. I've always found it hard to explain.
