Alleyway rated for 3DS

Jun 2nd 2011 6:00AM (Joystiq)
This game wasn't the best of breakout clones even way back then. When the ball hit your paddle it would go in reverse direction regardless of angle, if I remember correctly. So it was basically *-1 to Speed for every paddle intersection. OF COURSE, I didn't know that way back then; I just thought it compared poorly to my Dad's BBC computer version.

WayForward's Mighty Milky Way orbits DSiWare tomorrow

@BPMOmega XBL PSN Steam

Not too sure about the 3DS; can't manufacture interest for its main attractions.

Love that list of games you mentioned to that commenter down below, by the by. Have great memories of Sigma Star, and I always seem to come back to Duck Amuck.

Almost makes me wish I owned a DSI. It does looks gorgeous.

Probably the first marketplace game that has caught my attention.

UK government may close online shopping tax loophole

Mar 24th 2011 6:11AM (Joystiq)
This is a tad hypocritical on my part as I do own, a very busy, an Amazon account, but I've always felt that this was basic case of tax avoidance. It seemed no different to the bank that places its base offshore yet layers its advertisements with layers upon layers of 'Britishness', paying 1-2% corporation tax during the process. It's deceptive and wrong. The little Video Game Storeā„¢ down the road pays full VAT; the rules should not be different for internet giants like Amazon and their lot.

There's also the case of less PAYE being paid into the public wallet; this inhibits public investment. And if smaller brick and mortar stores cannot compete with internet retailers that exploit this loophole then they have to downsize and/or close-down; this inhibits job creation.

Gamestop to stop buying GBA systems and games in April

Mar 11th 2011 10:35AM (Joystiq)
CEX here in the UK stopped buying and selling GBA games about a year ago; I only found out six months later.

Subsequently, I missed out on the grand, dirt cheap sell off, which included, allegedly, multiple copies of Riviera: TPL, a game I've spent years looking for.

3DS Virtual Console getting Game Gear and TurboGraphx-16 games, coming late May

@Shadow Hog

Damn, I adore you thiiiiis much. I loved Baku Baku. One of my greatest gaming regrets was trading in that game for, I think, Exhumed(???); whatever the game was called, at the time it felt like swapping a lovely flower for something a tad less flowerly.

I really 'need' to find another copy of Baku Baku.

BBC: Spanish police arrest blackmailing Nintendo hacker [update]

I wish this report didn't come from AFP or AP - though linked to the BBC, it's briefness indicates indicates that this was performed by a poor desk-bound reporter at some 'copy factory'. Not nearly enough information, you know.

Nintendo and online; it's just embarrassing. Maybe this is simply the action of a trusted partner, former or present; say a developer or a publisher or an employee of Nintendo Europe. Or maybe some clever clogs might have compromised network security, or whatnot. But compromise occurs only where there is slackness, and given the woeful state of Nintendo online...I don't know.

Part of me feels like that, unless the Spaniard was demanding capital, he should be released without charge. The onus should be on the protectorate of information, in this case Nintendo, and not the compromiser - or leaker.

NintendoWare Weekly: Zombie Panic demo, Magic Destiny

Jan 31st 2011 11:01AM (Joystiq)
"Zombie Panic in Wonderland, an entertaining forward-scrolling shooter..."

Zombie Panic != entertaining.

The problem with Zombie Panic is its inherent lack of forward momentum. At times the game teases the player with a few incremental steps forward and a slightly different environment, but for the most part it seems settled in gallery shooter mode - ala Point Blank. Which is okay, I guess. But you would have thought Akaoni would have given Space Harrier a spin, you know.

Great art, though.

Yuji Naka's 'Rodea the Sky Soldier' in motion

Jan 25th 2011 4:55AM (Joystiq)
The little footage released so far seems so out of step with what most publishers are pushing. Ignoring the 'bouncy' music and 'Reboot'-ish cutscene visuals, this game does look interesting.
