How to fight HDTV image lag

May 8th 2009 2:11AM (Joystiq)
I have a mid range 40" Sony 1080p set bought last September. That particular model is not one of the worst when it comes to input lag, but certainly not the best either. It has a "game mode" though and if you use that input lag should not be much of a problem. In the game mode the various picture enhancement technologies are not available.

However, some of the picture enhancement technologies are not useless at all. I'm quite fond of Sony's Motionflow because it effectively doubles the motion resolution from 300 to 600 vertical lines. That difference is clearly noticeable in gaming (have a go at something like Wipeout HD if you can, with and without Motionflow), at the cost of increased input lag.

How much the input lag bothers depends very much on the game. I did complete Ratchet & Clank TOD on PS3 with Motionflow on, but in a frantic shooter like Geometry Wars on Xbox 360 I think can detect the lagginess and the "game mode" is definitely the way to go.

There are also big differences in how much these motion enhancers cause lag (also between Sony sets), so study before you buy!

If I have understood correctly Motionflow and other similar technologies interpolate individual frames and because of that there will always be *some* input lag when using them.

How would you change Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic?

Apr 25th 2009 4:09AM (Engadget)
8 megapixel camera? Why? I would rather have the current 3.2 megapixels, or whatever, but with better optics.

When it comes to other improvements, I've found the browser in 5800 to be quite unresponsive. You often get just an empty white screen and the browser doesn't give you any indication what it's doing.

Did it crash? Or is it just loading the page? Who knows because there are no visible indicators. That's really annoying.

Ruined by glossy display. Just like the successor to NC10.

Apparently the majority of customers are dumb. It's shiny and looks great...when the computer is switched off.

"At night, she operates under the name "Edite Bente""

It's "Edita Bente". A quick Google image search confirms this if anything...

Amazon's Gold Box sale features Nokia E71 for $289, shipped

Very nice offer. Here in Finland (the home of Nokia) E71 sells for 400 EUR, or about 500 USD.

"Attorneys from the firm are looking into the injuries and emotional distress sustained by passengers."

Asking for millions (which will surely happen) due to "emotional distress" or "trauma" (which I'm sure is real) is bullshit. Only in USA, I guess.

Does receiving $5 million US dollars in damages cure the nightmares and make the distress go away?

It was an unfortunate accident and they should be thankful for being *alive*.

Nokia pulls out of Japan, nobody notices

Nov 27th 2008 5:05AM (Engadget)
Japanese phones are popular in Japan. It is a very difficult market to enter for non-Japanese consumer electronics companies.

I doubt any of the other non-Japanese mobile phone makers are making much of an impact in the Japanese market. South Korean brands such as LG and Samsung might be somewhat relevant there, I don't know.

For example, what is Motorola's market share in Japan?

Why do people put cameras, laptops and jewelry into checked luggage? Professional camera crews are of course another matter due to the amount of stuff they are carrying, but others should just put them in hand luggage.

Secondly, it's quite amusing that his co-workers didn't notice anything. I'm quite sure they don't screen and open the bags alone. I wouldn't be surprised if they were all in it.

What happens in Dubai stays in Dubai (Dubai's jails, that is)

"However, ask yourself this question: how many countries in the world would be tolerant of a couple having sex on the beach if they were caught? Wouldn't it be regarded as indecent exposure in a lot of countries?"

I don't think they were having sex in broad daylight among sunbathers.

I cannot think of any civilized western country where having sex on an empty beach would get you jailed. Fined MAYBE, but in most places you would just be told to find a better place for your activities.

Besides, in this case one major issue is also the fact that this couple wasn't married to each other. Having sex outside marriage is a big no-no, especially for the women.

Recipe: Risotto with canned tuna

Don't forget to add some Parmigiano Reggiano (or Grana Padano) cheese to your risotto. It's an essential ingredient.
