Would you buy a voice-controlled camera, or perhaps a DSLR with touchsceen?

Jun 9th 2010 11:28AM (Engadget)
Touch screen controls improve on NOTHING. Touch-to-focus is nothing new. On my Nikon D40 it's called "point the camera where you want it to focus, then recompose."

We are going to have to endure about 10 years of new cameras being made worthless through excessive use of touch interfaces. When is the gimmick factor finally going to wear off on this?

@RonProctor can't you just nudge the timing in a video editor?

@BuzzMega, another problem is that the setup would need to be recalibrated every time the subject distance changed. Unless they plan to shift individual frames around in post-processing (could be time consuming or ugly or both; not sure).

When people (rarely) do this kind of thing on the PC, all they get is a few eye rolls and a kick from the admin. Why is it so tempting for the console player?

For me the selling point would be the lens design. Less fragile. I might be willing to put that in my pocket without a case, which is something I wouldn't do with my FX30. I wish they'd use tempered glass over the LCD though, like the iPhone.

Casio's EXILIM EX-H10 ultra-compact gets 12.1 megapixels 10x closer

BarCODE, while I'm no fan of pointless megapixels, the ISO400 shots from today are much better than they were when the megapixel numbers were lower. Go back and look at some of the shots from those cameras and you'll see chroma noise running rampant. The increase in megapixels has brought with it an increase in the technology used to suppress noise, and this has had some nasty-looking results. Not all cameras suffer from this though. And even in the worst cases, when you scale down the results to match the resolution of their forefathers, the modern cameras look as good or better. Have you tried this? Try it! I have.

MJPEG is not great, but I think most other Casios have MPEG4 or h.264 or something, so I would be surprised if this one didn't. I too hope it has a reasonable burst mode (some Casios are pretty slow, ironically considering their line of ultra-fast cameras). Two of your issues are non-issues though: 24fps is the movie standard, and it's the frame rate of the best-looking shows on television. Many actually prefer that look. When you speed up the framerate it ends up looking like public access TV. And the sensor is exactly the same size as the competition.

This is basically a multi-monitor setup without the seams, and it's every bit as useful. Unless you disagree with the usefulness of multiple monitors, then you must admit to the usefulness of this big guy. Of course it's going to be absurdly expensive though, but that's because it's designed for people who don't care what it costs.
