Head of Pipeworks steps down after allegations prove true

Oct 12th 2011 9:54AM (Joystiq)
@Bobrek In general, it's consider a major ethical breach to claim membership in an elite military force when you, in fact, were not. This wasn't a question of sophistry; there are specific membership lists, entrance programs and trials and honors associated with particular military groups. Claiming membership in them is considered an egregious fault amongst current and former military members. So much so, in fact, that the president signed a law in 2005 called the "Stolen Valor Act" to make it a federal crime (said law was deemed far too broad and struck down as unconsitutional).

Many people who lay claims to greater military service often do so for personal gain (in some cases defrauding charities or misleading well-meaning people)...so I can understand why some would be very upset over it.

@drunkingamebar Apparently you've never been to New Jersey, home of the traffic circle. ;)

Burnout Crash review: Accident prevention

@WiredKnight I'd assume he was, since I agree with him. I loved Burnout Paradise and Takedown was fun, but 3 was the peak, IMHO. In general, most reviews agree:

PSA: the 3DS Ambassador game download process is ... complicated

Aug 31st 2011 11:36AM (Joystiq)
@TCJJ Given how many people had trouble downloading stuff from the PS3 Welcome Back program, I'm not sure I'd agree. I downloaded all of my ambassador games quickly and easy. Laborious and clumsy? Sure.

But when my PS3 downloads failed, I ended up having to jump through hoops until I finally found a forum post that detailed where the hidden 'lost' download had disappeared to. Sony's support was utterly clueless for several days on this point and many of us thought we'd lost one or both of our downloads due to their weird handling of matters.

Duke Nukem finally figures out what's wrong in The Shining's Overlook Hotel

@FriedConsole Given what we know of Stanley Kubrick (as he mentions in the second half of the video), Yes. Kubrick was famous for being meticulous about details and specifics elements. Kubrick was a very smart director, whatever faults he may have had. Some of the design elements could only be intentional.

Fan created Half-Life trailer's animation is out of this world

Jun 1st 2011 11:44AM (Joystiq)
@aray48 The appeal was simple. Half-Life moved the FPS as a category forward on several points. It was revolutionary both within the game and from a meta standpoint.

It made the FPS actually have a story and a well-written, immersive story at that. You were in the center of the action as it developed. It featured a new standard for voice-acting. It featured (for the time) revolutionary AI. It featured lots of game concepts that were, at that time, new or rare. Especially important is that it opened the door to user-developed content and development in a way that we take for granted now, but was rare back then.

Half-Life raised the bar far beyond the state of the art when released. It may be hard to understand that if you played it several years later. Every FPS after half-life was informed by it.

Asperger's expert recommends L.A. Noire as teaching tool

May 24th 2011 2:33PM (Joystiq)
@Typhonic You've confused 'coping tool for education' with 'cure'. Aspies CAN change, but they disorder doesn't go away. But that doesn't mean they don't develop or adapt. Temple Grandin is an example, Jon Robison is another. The disorder never went away, but they discovered ways to cope and survive.

Asperger's expert recommends L.A. Noire as teaching tool

@CheesecakeJones Just so. My son has Asperger's, as does my nephew. They are at different ranges on the spectrum. You might not realize my son has it at first, though if you had spent time with him when he was younger, walking in circles while talking about his topic of interest (regardless of whether you were in the conversation), you might not have that problem. He still has problems with things like unusual bluntness and not fully understand social cues. My nephew is far more focused and will turn every conversation to his topic of choice, if he can. His vocal cadence is unusual and while everyone agrees that he's polite and very nice, he has a hard time making friends or understanding social niceties.

Video games can be excellent tools and recreation. I'm glad that Iggy was able to help his brother with socialization...but if that was the solution (or if it was so easy) then Asperger's Syndrome would already be a non-issue. It isn't and so it remains a problem for many people.

Prototype 2 trailer explains Alex Mercer's heel turn

Apr 21st 2011 2:03PM (Joystiq)
I tried this briefly and though it was OK. I preferred Infamous for giving the choice to NOT be a mass-murdering monster; Prototype offers you no such choice. You may be well-intentioned, but you ARE a monster. When the game's initial tutorial has you devouring an innocents...well, that was about where I checked out. I liked Hulk: Ultimate Destruction because it gave me the powers of the Hulk, but I also got to be a HERO.

I don't mind having the option to be a bad guy...I just don't want to be forced to ONLY be a bad guy. I suspect this may be the source of the change in Prototype 2.

'Elfquest' Fans Take Movie Matters Into Their Own Hands in 'A Fan Imagining' [Video]

Apr 8th 2011 10:30AM (ComicsAlliance)
I don't mean to rain a fan parade, here. The production values are quite nice, the costuming top-notch and certainly the ladies are pleasing to the eye.

But this ISN'T a trailer. It's very well-made Cosplay. If you don't know anything about the story of Elfquest, you're not getting it here. There is a lot of intimation of elements from the story...but this is more like a visualization of elfquest without the actual narrative.
