Nice opening title to your article--are you going down the gossip-columnist spiral? ...or are you already there?

Woody Allen: lucky, but not great

what point is being brought up here? that some directors(& actors/others in the limelight) end up thru their genius/eccentricity, doing some-odd yaddy yaddy in their personal lives that we in our untouched, easy-going private lives, are quick to openly condemn? (i.e see Mr. Polanski, Mr. Brando et al) Not that I agree with everything that Mr. Allen has done in his private-life, but do we always have to bring up that subject when talking about his films? Regarding Allen's film-making, I think he's a brilliant comic and can make excellent close-knit, up-&-personal type o films. But his works are in a different mold than Fellini's or Kurosawa's, whose films were always a visual first, with the script being secondary (not to say that Fellini or Kurosawa held back anything with their scripts). We're talkin two different schools here.

Wow, a movie (a remake at that) that focuses on the intricacies & day-to-day challenges of primitive-woman/man? Now there's something I'll sign up to see...yeah, right! (...what next?, "Beverly Hills, at 10,000 BC"?) Another screaming example of just how lacking of good subjects/plots Hollywood has become...

Review: Once Upon a Time in the West

Aside from the script shortcomings (ah, the translations...), your talkin about one of the greatest westerns ever made (...er, maybe my favorite). From the fantastic, larger-than-life -ness of the characters, to the simple, often subtle metaphors which applied to the growing adolescent America of the day (and ironically, of which we can still find parallels in our modern-day America as well), Sergio Leone created a great tribute in the form of an opera. And as Martha says (and I 2nd that!), see it on the big screen if you can, there's so much more to it. ps, I think that the long intro (somewhere around 15-20 minutes) is a record.

Last Days: Is Gus Van Sant joking?

I'm writing here because this article/review by Karina Longworth is so well written. Add the fact that I myself am a film-maker in (and from) Seattle and am old enough where the subject of this movie is kinda close and personal. I'm anxious (and nervous in my own right) to see this movie, and these comments will help the ride. Keep up the great writing Ms. Longworth...I look forward to more down the road.
