Apr 23rd 2006 1:57AM (Engadget)However I do have a number of problems with the Sidekick in that it is T-mobile only so there isn't a high speed broadband network available for the device. I can't add a lot of the cool applications to the device that I would on a Windows Mobile or even Palm device. I would like to add applications like the Sling Media player (to watch TV) and Skype to my Sidekick, but this is simply not possible because of the T-mobile limitations and because of the locked down nature of Danger's OS. Hopefully I will at least be able to access music and video through ORB.com on the new Sidekick, but I question whether that will be possible with the proprietary web browser that the Sidekick has.
I think HTC is kind of like the old Dell or "beige box" of the smart phone industry and unfortunately they don't really seem to get it. The sidekick is not perfect and I think other companies could do far better (maybe they can't because of patent issues), but as an all in one phone I think the Sidekick line is unfortunately the best that's available. I really wish HTC could put out a hardware device that was on par with the Sidekick (5-line spacious keyboard, ambient light detecting screen visible in direct sunlight, long battery life, scroll wheel for web browsing and navigation, and in a pocketable size).
