Criticism of racial stereotyping in games

Feb 18th 2007 6:15PM (Joystiq)
"A videogame is fantasy!"

then

"In real life, blacks commit heinous criminal acts at a rate far greater than that of whites"

Great job nullifying your own point.

Criticism of racial stereotyping in games

Feb 18th 2007 4:07PM (Joystiq)
@67

I wholly realize Pheonix Wright is developed in Japan and so is Trauma Center, and many other games outside the ordinary, which is my point. That's why I brought up the point of Western developers producing a courtroom comedy text adventure or medical simulation starring a representative of a minority character because the West is America and Europe, which are most familiar with 'diverse' ethnicities, yet game development remains a homogenously (sp) white affair. Yeah, it probably won't be solved until we see more African and Hispanic Americans in game development.

Goober says, "how many games have a lead character that's a positive role model regardless of what color he/she is?" Not many. Video games are too linear right now, built upon a shallow good vs. evil model when there are countless other avenues to pursue.

Finally, the amount of ignorance in response to this post... it's just bullshit. Just because Black Americans possess what can be considered the most pull in public opinion and are most vocal on issues that offend them doesn't mean they're "complaining" or that they are the only minority to ever get offended. EVERY MINORITY OFFENSE DOES NOT MAKE NATIONAL HEADLINES. Stop showing your ignorance and/or immaturity.

In 2005 Activision released Gun, an action-adventure based in the 19th century American West that drew criticism from Native American groups for the depiction of the practice of 'scalping,' where the player has to forcibly remove the hair off of an Indian to complete a goal.

Criticism of racial stereotyping in games

@24. LaughingTarget where's your example of a game that 'panders' to black people? In this day and age, what game would 'pander' to 'blacks' so much like opening a black museum? Can't find an example? Yeah I know. 187: Ride or Die, 25 to Life, Saint's Row, the Def Jams, Narc, True Crime:NY, GTA:SA... they all portray black people as ruthless. Not always villians (though villainous), or always acting as the lone race, but never the multifaceted hero. Just 'ruthless'.

Why couldn't there be a black Phoenix Wright-style character? Do Western developers understand how to make a game that challenges the player outside of situations conducive to violence? Could that even make it to the publisher past the conception stage? I'll give the Internet forum posters and bloggers the benefit of the doubt, meaning they wouldn't flip out when the game is announced.

Don Cheadle was just on a second ago. Don Cheadle was in Ocean's Eleven, Hotel Rwanda, and Rush Hour 2. Think about the differences between those movies. Racial stereotyping is just a diminutive circle of the relatively larger Euler diagram of issues "labeled linearity in video games."

Capcom talks M-rated games on the Wii

Feb 13th 2007 2:56AM (Joystiq)
"Svensson acknowledges that the M-rated Resident Evil 4 sold extremely well on the GameCube, even though he predicts the console's primary demographic between the ages of six and 10."

SIX AND TEN?! That's even lower than Nintendo Power's target audience!!

OoT will not cost 1200 points on the US Virtual Console, I'll put money on that. They've re-released it too many times over here.

Nintendo trickles out Q1 games list

Jan 23rd 2007 7:43PM (Joystiq)
@40:

If Nintendo can sell 4 million consoles in the span of two months off of the strength of a so-called "gimmicky remote," why in the hell would they exit the hardware industry? The Wii is the fastest selling game console in Australia, (not to mention the DS is the fastest system to 10 million in Europe.)People (including you and me) are paying to play Nintendo's game. So just drop the 'quit the industry' argument, it's tired. Sell your system for a loss if you must, but don't be a sore loser.

It's so catchy! (Wii delight #003)

You couldn't think of any real delights, so you resorted to patronizing the Wii, is that right?
