Captain's Log: A new era begins

Jan 16th 2012 1:54PM (Massively)
That C-Store Tactical Escort Refit is actually a Vice Admiral Ship (Level 50), which is why it had the extra console slots and extra bridge officers. It's there so that Vice Admirals can fly the iconic ships at max level and still be equal to flying a standard Vice Admiral ship. I'm pretty sure all the "Refits" are Vice Admiral ships.

Rhapsody won't sing Apple's subscription tune

Feb 16th 2011 10:39AM (TUAW.com)
There's no "wanting" to use Apple's billing mechanism, the new rules FORCE you to use Apple's billing mechanism. You MUST have InApp purchase for subscriptions if you offer them outside your app.

In addition, your App CANNOT Link to your out of App Billing Service (your website). From within the App, the only way to pay, is to go through the InApp purchase through Apple.

Raphsody can't even point people to their own website from inside their app!!

Apple's subscription model is boon to consumers, bad for publishers

You can't! Apple contractually requires the In-App price to be the same or lower than your out of App purchase price or they'll pull your app out of the store.

Apple's subscription model is boon to consumers, bad for publishers

Except I don't want my Netflix account tied to my itunes account. I use Netflix on my Xbox, my iPhone and my Laptop.
Why should Netflix be forced to give Apple 30% of my monthly subscription fee when I watch the vast majority of my content on my Xbox and my Laptop.
I guarantee it's going to force Netflix to increase their prices.

Mozilla evangelist asks Apple, Google and Microsoft to stop installing unwanted plug-ins

Dec 1st 2010 10:56AM (TUAW.com)
It's not sites doing drive-by plugin installs, Firefox has no role in the installation of the plugins this guy is talking about.
.
It's users installing desktop software that includes Firefox plugins, and they are being installed in the directory they're supposed to be installed to, as specified by Mozilla.
Firefox loads plug ins from the OS wide/Global Plugin directory the way it's designed to.

Attention US iPhone users: use a standby alarm clock for now

Nov 6th 2010 7:44PM (TUAW.com)
The Actual Time, and the Alarm Time are recorded on the device in UTC and triggered when the Alarm Trime occurs + the TImezone offset (-4 hours for the Eastern Timezone for instance). When we switch between Daylight Savings and Standard Time, that Offset changes by one (from -4 to -5 or -5 to -4 depending on which switch it is).

Part of the problem, I believe, is that the US and Canada changed when Daylight Savings occurs by a week, which is why it started happening to people in North America last week, two years ago, we switched a week earlier.

It's just shoddy handling of the Time Zones and Daylight Saving Time changes. And it's not difficult to test either. Just set the time prior to the DST/ST dates and let the time tick over and check the behaviour.

Color me shocked that tutorial books for the Apple platform sell 'well' on the Apple Platform.

Apple posts video showing antenna issue on Nokia N97 mini

Jul 21st 2010 4:17PM (TUAW.com)
There are really two issues, and Apple has done a masterful job confusing the two of them, and deflecting everyone away from the real problem.

All cell phone antenna's can suffer from attenuation when held, when the hand is between the cell phone's antenna and the Cell Tower the phone is communicating with. This is what every video of other phones Apple has put up demonstrates to greater or lesser degrees, the iPhone 4 also exhibits this issue, as it is not immune to the laws of physics.

The OTHER issue with the iPhone 4, is that bridging the gap between the cellular and wifi/gps/bluetooth antenna with the hand/finger shorts the two antenna's, causing significant signal loss. You can do this on an iPhone 4 with a single finger touching the gap. NONE of the other smartphones demonstrate this, because none of them have external antenna's that can be physically shorted by the user. A single finger is not sufficient to cause attenuation be being between the phone and the broadcasting cell tower.

Apple never demonstrates this, and THIS is what the Rubber bumpers are for, to keep you from bridging the gap with your hand. The rubber bumpers do nothing to help the signal attenuation when your hand is between the cell phone's antenna and the Cell tower it's communicating with, because again, they are not immune to the laws of physics.

Apple took a problem all radio systems face, and made it WORSE with the gapped antennas that can be physically bridged, but they'll never admit to that, they'd rather wave a bunch of videos of other cell phones and shout "look over here, look over here!"

Ballmer reveals some 'slate' PCs, but does not thrill

Jan 8th 2010 2:49PM (TUAW.com)
Um, no.
The Slate name has been applied to the Tablet PC Form factor that lacks a keyboard for nigh on a decade now.
Convertible's refer to Tablet PC's with a swivelling screen and a keyboard.
Hybrid's are Convertible's with a detachable keyboard.

People have been calling the Apple tablet an iSlate because they're just attaching the Apple 'i' prefix to the already well established name for this particular form-factor.

Ballmer reveals some 'slate' PCs, but does not thrill

You do realize don't you, that slate form factor Tablets have been around for nigh on a decade don't you, and that they've always been called Slates (no keyboard).
That's the joke, when people were coming up with the name for Apple's Tablet, they just stuck an i on the front of the already established name for this form factor.
