PS3 firmware version 1.5 (almost) ready for download

Jan 23rd 2007 9:11AM (Joystiq)
@Kevin:

Blu-ray movies will play at 1080i. During the set-up process, make sure 1080i is listed as a supported resolution on the console, otherwise you will get 480p.

The only issue is that the system defaults everything to the highest resolution available. Dashboard resolution is now 1080i making the text in the store and web browser so tiny as to be absurd. You can switch resoltuions back and forth when you want to watch a movie, but that is an inconvenience. =(

To the issue at hand:
- The PS3 is designed to run at 1080p to: sell more Sony TV's
- The vast majority of HD sets available now are 720p native(well 768p native). The number of 1080p sets that are even available to purchase is miniscule.
- Sony's own standalone Blu-Ray player, the BDP-S1 outputs at 720p
- JET, please tell us why Sony's standalone player supports 720p output and the PS3 does not, because I'd love to hear the explanation.

GameStop pulls out creative stops to move PS3s

Jan 7th 2007 10:31AM (Joystiq)
Until there is sales data to compare to the 360 numbers from last year... It is completely possible that demand is actually quite high and Sony is supplying significantly more product into the pipeline than was the case with the PS2 and 360.

Star Trek: Legacy goes the wrong way

Jan 4th 2007 12:47PM (Joystiq Xbox)
Once you get past the steep learning curve for controlling multiple ships, some terrible missions(Revelations), are not turned off by the limited(i.e. not fun) "Enterprise" era ships and Scott Bakula's wooden voice overs in the first few missions; it levels off into a poor rendition of the 10 year old PC game, Homeworld.

Still worth a rental for any Trek fan. The story is quite good, though it's presentation is similar to Gears of War(meaning there is none). Watch the comic style cut scenes in the extras first so it makes more sense.

As one reviewer stated: it's best played on easy with a guide nearby.

Uwe Boll does something awful to another critic

Re: Ragusauce "Uwe was supposed to fight Seanbaby but then backed out, like a chicken, at the last minute."

To my knowledge, Seanbaby was never on the list of people Boll agreed to fight.

Anyone who believes "It's all a PR stunt, the punches won't be real" obviously didn't see the last fight.

Sony expects gamers to "Play Beyond" $599 [update1]

May 23rd 2006 8:35AM (Joystiq)
A few thoughts:

#39: Xbox Live is 15 Euros a month? It's less than $5 here in the US. Ouch!

#49: I'll agree that the 360 Core sucks, but it is EXACTLY the same hardware as the Premium, minus a few peripherals. The $499 PS3 is missing the HDMI port, a significant omission that can not be upgraded making the cheaper PS3 a different piece of hardware. I'm guessing a 1080p capable HDMI port is VERY expensive.

Thinking that the PS3 will not sell out at launch and be in short supply for the first few months is just foolish. Assuming that Sony has already lost this generation is foolish as well.
To my mind, Sony has simply delayed a portion of their intial console sales until the price drops or a "must have" title appears.

RE: #23. XBLA has new content in addition to the emulated content that all three services will carry, which might be an advantage in the long term.

Sony trounces MSFT & Nintendo in brand trust survey [update 1]

Mar 30th 2006 8:13AM (Joystiq)
Agree with #43. The "brand" most people are considering when referring to Sony is electronics(likely TV's), Microsoft is software(Windows) and Nintendo, gaming consoles.
