Is that what happened? I was under the impression that they got duped by xtranormal's social media guru and that the de-emphasis on substantial content was related to the uglification of the site a few weeks ago.

Way to stick it to your readers like a good old corporate publication.

Here's a counter offer: We the readers will stop thinking of engadget as a fallen and self-centered new media survivour when its editors and contributors show signs of taking readers' concerns seriously.

For example, tuaw has a "no iphone" option for readers who care about Apple news, but not iphone news. For engadget, I'd like a "no naval-gazing" option, through which I could receive the value you add to reporting through analysis, without the accusatory fluff like this which shows up on a slow news day. FWIW, news.ycombinator.com adds no internal editorial input (about technology, gadgets and other subjects) and yet has superior analysis through its devoted readers because they do not do anything to annoy their source of eyeballs.

Whilst perusing this site, I was amazed at the number of judgemental people commenting on the price of things and how shallow people were. This blog is called Luxist for a reason; appreciating the finer things in life (that many of us have worked our bums off to be able to afford) does not make one shallow or selfish. If you don't like the nature of the site, don't browse it. Start a thriftist.com and leave the luxists alone.

To people who comment that Ramsay is rude, mean, etc. you should really catch re-runs of his Kitchen Nightmares series on BBC America. His over the top portrayal on Hell's Kitchen was just for ratings.
