Scuba diver sets new depth record exploring New Zealand cave

May 9th 2011 12:50PM (Gadling)
Where is the link for the original article?
Also, "sets new depth record" for what? depth in a cave? Or depth in a New Zealand cave? Or depth in a cave on a rebreather?

American Airlines flight makes emergency landing in Las Vegas

Is there a source for this?

Top five best carry on bags for travel gifts

Dec 15th 2010 1:48PM (Gadling)
I traveled thru Spain this year, for 3 weeks, with one bag: Red Oxx Air Boss. Additionally, I've gone on a number of trips this year with it and have still be impressed. It easily holds adventure clothing and a full suit and related articles for a wedding I attended.

It's not cheap, approx $250 but I love it.

The one complaint I have is that the heavier it gets, you wish it had backpack straps.

Night at the Valencia Aquarium - Videos and More

Dec 15th 2010 1:10PM (Gadling)
I did like the Arts and Science complex, it looks like someone designed the most outlandish scene in a video game and ran with it.

However, the Valencia aquarium was a bit of a let down. It's nice but coming from San Diego with Sea World, it was smaller and more expensive.

Trump Chicago first hotel to offer certified organic room-service menu

Since it's a Trump hotel, it should offer bankruptcy services, I mean he's either done it or almost done it numerous times.

Ten things you should NEVER do on a layover

Jul 23rd 2010 11:20PM (Gadling)
Thisis very well written and funny.

However, I've slept in LOTS of airports during layovers; Asia and India were the most difficult. You are telling me that during a 7 to 10 hour layover, I shouldn't sleep ? LOL. No way.

Also, you were in a Delta lounge and didn't go up to the front desk and let them know that you were on this delayed flight? They bend over backwards in those places and they have a travel desk in the lounge, with access to SABRE or whatever they are calling it these days. Your tip should have been: Don't trust the online status of your flight.

Drugs, they should issue those to you on the flight. Stuck on the Tarmac, in Phoenix, for three hours? There is a pill for that.

White Collar Travel: Five embarrassing confessions of a business traveler

May 21st 2010 7:01PM (Gadling)
Ahh business travel, I know it well. I was on the road for 4 years early in my career.

I made extra cash on the per diem as well but my strategy was a bit different. My per diem was $50 a day and I usually was at the same client for at least 4 months at a time, so I had time to get to know the area. I would always find a hotel that had a fridge AND microwave in the room. Courtyard Marriott was my favorite.

On Monday, I would fly in, go to client, work and then go to hotel. On the way to the hotel, I would hit Trader Joes or other grocery store. I would spend $50 and get Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner for the week. Get back to the hotel and use my Tetris skills to pack everything into the fridge.

I made an extra $800 a month doing that and actually ate better. Anything I didn't eat, I would leave at the client's office or bring it on home (this is pre-9/11).

11 tips for sleeping on planes

Jan 22nd 2010 7:01PM (Gadling)
I have plan-elipse, I get drowsy as soon as the doors open. I think I've got about 7 hour at once but my favorite flight was from Oakland to Orange County. I feel asleep when the closed the door in Oakland and I awoke when we touched down in Orange County. It felt like I had just teleported.

Staying warm is my strategy, grab a blanket as you board and use it, you'll sleep more sound.

However, my pet peeve is being woken up. On a flight from Bangkok to Tokyo, I was shaken out of my seat because the stewardess didn't want me to wake up and then ask for a meal. I wasn't even hungry. I also had this happen on a flight to Athens, they made me wakeup, put my seat forward during the meal.

Rumor: Apple to announce Verizon iPhone on the 27th

Jan 21st 2010 4:53PM (TUAW.com)
This a natural progression for Apple, it's table stakes in the US cell phone market. Blackberry and other smart phone vendors off CDMA versions of their devices, so it's not surprise that Apple would want that as well.

My main issue with Verizon is that CDMA is mainly used in the US and a few other countries. So unless this has both a GSM and a CDMA radio it seems more locked to a network than the current Iphone is to AT&T.

At least with a GSM Iphone you can switch carries in the US (ala unlocking of course) and I love the ability to use my iphone when I travel out of the country.
