Making The (Up) Grade: Minority Report

I like the prominent use of multitouch on the cover.

Discuss: Who Cares If It's Hand-Drawn or Computer-Animated?

Dec 26th 2009 10:17AM (Cinematical)
Wow, I couldn't agree with Kate more. The idea that 2D hand-drawn animation is worthless thanks to 3D computer animation is horribly stupid, and it's due to that same logic that 2D animation is in danger of going extinct.

I also rather disagree with this article, because most of the adults I've talked to think it's acceptable to see a movie if it's computer animated but not if it's hand-drawn. It's a common consensus now that 2D animated films are for children only, and computer-animated films can be appreciated by both children and adults. This is, I believe, partly due to movies like Shrek and the fact that most computer animated films of this decade have included innuendos and subtle (or not-so-subtle) references to appeal to the adult demographic, which has reinforced the belief that computer animated films are more acceptable for adults to watch.

It's sad; I think there's wonderful storytelling potential in both formats.

'Marmaduke' Teaser Barks Up the Wrong Tree

Marmaduke is one of the least funny comic strips of all time. My hope that the movie is much better isn't very high.

Scenes We Love: Immortal Beloved

Dec 6th 2009 11:13AM (Cinematical)
The scene that always lingers with me is the Ode to Joy (as someone mentioned above), with little Beethoven laying down on the surface of the lake, with the reflection of thousands of stars around him...it's really powerful

What Movies Died with VHS?

Mar 1st 2009 6:12PM (Cinematical)
I think the point that Random was trying to make is that the one 'obscure' title you were able to conjure up is actually available on DVD. Your response was perfectly USA-centric, assuming that it only counts if it's released in America. Region-free DVD players are available all over the place - I've purchased a couple over the years without even realizing it until I opened the box. And importing it from Australia is probably pretty cheap and easy, too.

The fact of the matter is that most good movies are either on DVD, or are on their way to DVD. Considering that the industry was dominated by one format (VHS) to the point where damn near every home in the free world had a VCR, it's remarkable how quickly the market was able to adapt to an entirely new format. It doesn't just happen over night.

Besides, VHS tapes are incredibly easy to find on ebay and half.com, and they're cheap, too. Complaining just to complain is no fun, and will likely not make you the most popular person at the party.

An Open Letter to the Three Jerks Who Sat Behind Me at the Movies Yesterday

Jan 31st 2009 2:07PM (Cinematical)
I had the absolute worst experience during Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls. I know, many of you hated it, but I had some asshat behind me saying how much the movie sucked from beginning to end, including (but not limited to): this is so unrealistic! this movie is shit! she [cate blanchett, for shame!] is the ugliest woman i've ever seen!

...and so on, and so forth. some people should be banned from ever seeing movies in public.

Fan Rant: Watching Movies on Television

Dec 1st 2008 3:37PM (Cinematical)
Like someone above said, they have to watermark ads because people just fast-forward through the commercials. Also, a lot of shows wind up on the internet in a heartbeat, and watermarked ads make sure that the viewers are paying...somehow.
