There was probably no real damage. I doubt Apple instantly pays developers, it's probably monthly.

Hmm clicking the banner just brings me back to the banner. Selecting the phone doesn't list all this free stuff... I guess I have to call?

Epic's Mike Capps: PC piracy 'changed our business model'

May 19th 2010 2:26AM (Joystiq)
GoW for PC was an afterthought because Microsoft paid them to make it that way. Microsoft has clearly been trying to kill off PC gaming for awhile now. It's pretty obvious when you look at all these games Microsoft has been paying lots of money to make Xbox exclusive/early release.

The GTA IV expansions were just released for the PC and PS3 at the same time, long after the Xbox 360 version. MS paid Rockstar a lot of money for that delay. Technically there's no reason for a delay at all. They were just more missions in the same city; the engine had already been built on all 3 platforms.

Halo was originally a Mac/Windows games. MS bought out Bungie and turned it into an Xbox exclusive that was released for Mac/Windows years later.

I think it's a stupid move on Microsoft's part, but I think I know why they're doing this. They already have a huge majority of the computer market, their OS market share can't go up. On the computer MS only makes money off the sale of their OS, an OS they believe many people would buy with or without games. By getting people to buy an Xbox also, they get a piece of every dollar the user spends on gaming. Every time someone buys a game, accessory, the ability to play online, etc MS makes money.

I understand their reasons, but I think it'll prove to be a mistake in the future. It's just hastening the death of Windows. Apple does easy/pretty better and their market share is rising. Linux is cheaper and quickly becoming usable enough for the average user. What does Microsoft have without Windows? They may gain the console market for a generation or two, but console gaming is very different from the computer world. Controlling console gaming for a generation doesn't mean anything when the next generation comes out. Just look at PS2 -> PS3. MS could easily sacrifice Windows for a successful 360/720 and then release a Sega Saturn and lose everything.

Xbox 360 piracy is pretty easy. All you really have to do is open the case up, plug its DVD drive into a computer, and run a program. Yes, it's a little harder than PC, but anyone who is knowledgeable enough about this stuff to pirate games, should be able to follow a guide about it online. You can also play Xbox 360 games online assuming you don't play a game before release date or a bad copy of a game.

Anyways Epic's comment is BS. They were mainly making multiplayer games, which are pretty much unaffected by piracy on the PC. They had CD-Keys which is the only affective way to stop piracy.

Sony slapped with two more class-action suits over Other OS removal

May 11th 2010 6:07PM (Joystiq)
The point is that I bought a PS3 for a reason and not because I like to give Sony money. A major reason why I bought my PS3 even though I already have an Xbox 360 and gaming PC was because of the Other OS feature. Yes, I was disappointed in it once I finally got it running and I did not use it as much as I expected. But that is besides the point. I bought the PS3 because of multiple features of it, and now Sony is disabling either one or the rest of them.

I don't really care if I get a big settlement out of it or not, but I do want a large amount of money taken away from Sony to scare them and other companies from doing similar things in the future.
