Sony 'actively thinking about' charging for PSN, not offering more Blu-ray game downloads

Feb 3rd 2010 12:18PM (Joystiq)
As an owner of both the PS3 and Xbox 360 I must say that I enjoy each system. However, I've found myself using my PS3 exclusively for the last year or so with the 360 literally collecting dust! I have allowed my Xbox Live subscription to lapse as I've found no reason to keep it when, for me, I've found the equivalent in the PSN Service. For me the reasons are simple: I can play the same games on the PS3 as the Xbox 360, with a few exceptions, for FREE.
Also, believe it or not, I prefer the clean, uncluttered appearance of both the playstation store and the Cross Media Bar on the PS3 versus the visual-overload of the X360 Dashboard. I think Sony is on a roll now with the PS3 and the best bet for them is to not charge for PSN at this time and continue to grow the feature set of the service. At some later point maybe charge for the service but include something tangible like a magazine publication with monthly news, coupons, discounts, etc. that you would receive in the mail every month.

PS3 Firmware 3.0 troubles spawn class action lawsuit

Oct 6th 2009 8:39PM (Joystiq)
This is history repeating itself. I have a launch 60Gb PS3 and when one of the 2.X firmwares was released, I honestly don't recall which, it bricked my PS3. I remember searching online at the time to see what info there might be regarding this issue. What I found is much like what is apparently happening now, many, many, many people with identical system failures, in my case the firmware stopped the blu-ray drive from recognizing game discs and thus being able to play them.
Upon calling Sony they acknowledged that this was now a known problem and shipped me a box to send-in my PS3 for repair. Fortunately I was still under warranty but I can see how I would be really pissed if I had no warranty protection and was expected to pay $150 to fix a failure that Sony admitted was a firmware related issue.
