The Queue: A fel dilemma

Apr 6th 2011 12:45PM (WoW)
As a mage, I HATE-hate-hate it when the tank, guide, or whoever is in charge plops a moon on something and doesn't say anything. Worse, when they plop a moon on something and immediately charge in, guaranteeing that my CC will be broken the second I cast it.
"Please sheep moon" takes about 2 seconds to type. I could use part of that to realize what's going on, target the damn thing, and sheep it. You only need to ask on the first fight. My usual chosen tank and I have our rhythm worked out, but if I don't know you, don't expect me to read your mind.
It's akin to wanting me to make a table, not asking, and whining later that I wasn't "considerate." But that's another rant for another day.

Wow, I'm glad I'm a San Francisco "lady" who stopped using foursquare. I might feel commodified or something!

Breakfast Topic: I miss trash

Sep 18th 2009 8:22AM (WoW)
The problem with the no-trash situation, to me, is that you can run something and not get *anything* for your trouble. If the bosses don't drop an upgrade for you, you're not looking for emblems or faction hits, and you don't get any enchanting mats, you only walk away with the repair bill. I used to hit a vendor right away and see if I could cover my repair costs just by selling grey trash loot, but those worthless greens and random tradeskill mats DID add up.

Drama Mamas: Don't feed the trolls

"Despite the female player base, the game is clearly designed around the male audience." Really? I'm not going to swallow that WoW is a men's game and then accept any and all inappropriate behavior because I am not a man. And I highly doubt that's the case anyway- would be bad business, and Blizzard is historically pretty good with representing both genders (kind of) respectfully. But hey, if they don't want me in WoW, I'll gladly transfer my membership over to Pink Princess' World of Bakingcraft and Flowers as soon as it's released. Wait, no, I won't.
Men can talk however they want, but I am not going to group with them if it bothers me. I drop the F-bomb occasionally, perhaps that's bothered someone and I've lost their company (and consequently DPS/heals/tanking/whatever). If they're going to toss the word "rape" around like it's a greeting, they're going to lose mine. If it persists, I am going to report them to a GM and /ignore. It's not politics, it's actions and their consequences.

In short, I think my skin is fine just the way it is.

Hey Brofest- I totally appreciate your trying to be more inclusive in your guild! I think it will take a bit of self-examination for the guild. Take a look at the language being thrown around in guild chat or on vent. I'm not saying we gamer girls have delicate lady ears, but we really don't want to hear a lot of the stuff guys say in brofest-type situations, either. I don't think I need to be more specific here. You can use your imagination.
I have to say that as a feminist I was a wee bit hurt by Robin's breakdown, but girls who sort of fit those stereotypes certainly exist. But if you really want to be a gender-inclusive guild, treat every girl you encounter as a true gamer until unequivocally proven otherwise. True gamers sometimes play with their boyfriends, and have an infinite number of reasons to play or not play, S.O being one of them. True gamers sometimes disagree over loot or complain when they aren't being treated well- hell, sometimes true gamers even flirt. You wouldn't discount a guy for playing wow or grouping with you, but you would hopefully call a guy out for inappropriate guild behavior, right? Treat girls the same way, and I'm sure your guild will have plenty.

Let's Yoga: DIY workouts

May 9th 2008 9:20AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I'll be picking it up later today, I think, so I'll have more to say on it later.
I am NOT officially a teacher, yet, not for another day and a half or so! Which is to say that I've done a ton of yoga and know a lot about it but only have the experience of teaching a few classes under my belt. I'm sure an experienced teacher would have much more insightful things to say.
After I commented here I checked out the comments on another post and one person said something about safety, which is a totally valid point. You haven't mentioned how much they tell you about the poses, especially about alignment. If you're going to use Let's Yoga for an hour every day for a long time, that is an issue, as improper alignment can mess things up for a long time. I'm assuming that isn't the case, and that the game is really only meant to give you a taste and pique your interest, which is great and fine for me. Hands-on adjustments aren't always necessary for safety, but cleverly teaching good alignment is, as people new to yoga are usually pretty unaware of where their body is in space.
I noticed that some things in the screenshot- the full yogic breath, for example- are traditionally supposed to be taught only by someone very experienced for safety reasons. So I was a bit suprised to see that there. I will have more to say about that kind of stuff after I play around with my copy! How long does this yogathon last?

Let's Yoga: DIY workouts

May 8th 2008 1:01PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I'm a DS fanatic AND about to receive my Yoga Alliance 200 hour yoga teaching certificate, and I have to say, I'm really impressed by this title! At least your coverage of it and the screen shots- I haven't found a copy yet. It seems like a fairly well-rounded program, much better than I've seen in most of the beginner DVDs out there. I love that they teach you several breathing techniques and that, as you say, the workouts aren't too easy. You're not going to get a whole lot out of a workout that is too easy and doesn't focus on the breath, so this is great.
My one concern is that all of them seem really short. I'm used to 60-90 minute sequences, I would like to see this title at least have half hour classes. Does it go much longer than the 12 minute ones? Even so, 12 minutes can be a great introduction.
ALSO- extremely well-played with the Dalsim graphic.
