Joystiq takes on Hulkster and the Pokémon [Update 1]

Aug 8th 2006 2:06PM (Joystiq)
I don't have much to say about Pokemon except that Pikachu is adorable and those DS display screens are pretty neat.

Why all the hating on Hulk Hogan? What did he ever do to you? And to the person who said Hulk's physique is gone, I'd like to see you look like that when you're 50+.

Portable Gamecube rumor returns briefly

Aug 8th 2006 8:51AM (Joystiq)
No way this would happen. We might be playing Super Mario Sunshine on a portable in a few years, but it won't be on a GCN disk. NES carts have been switched to GBA, N64 carts to DS, and presumably GCN discs to something else in the future.

Nintendo makes tons selling the same game to us over and over again. I doubt they would be willing to forego the GCN "retro" market that is sure to exist in a couple of years.

Is the platform genre dying?

Aug 7th 2006 4:47PM (Joystiq)
It's so funny that PSX is responsible for the death of the platformer (and it IS) even though one its top three games is one (Symphony of the Night). The Saturn had a few wonderful platformers too -- Astal, Bug! (a 2D/3D hybrid) and Clockwork Night 2 among them. But once systems switched to being able to push lots of polygons, there was little reason to both hand drawing and animating sprites anymore.

Really, traditional platforming (for consoles anyway) died for good once all fighters made the switch to 3D. With no one drawing sprites anymore, there's little reason to bother with the genre.

Thank heavens for the GBA/DS however. For purists/ludites like myself, staying tethered to the past generation of gaming while still receiving new titles is a godsend. The Virual Console will presumable be just as nice.

Kind of unrelated, I started playing Conker's Bad Fur Day for the the first time this week. Man, Rare and Nintendo really knew how to make games togethert. What a masterpiece!

I don't use my Mac for games. Also, I'm not a child.

Pols want "Truth in Video Game Rating Act"

Aug 7th 2006 12:04PM (Joystiq)
Intentionally belaboring the point, to say that all Congressmen and women are running for reelection is factually inaccurate. If a person says "I hate Congress," they are referring to both Houses. Ergo, not every congressman or woman is running for reelection.

And I'll call senators "congressmen" all day long. I pay their salary, they can faux pas their face.

The potshots at MS seems a bit mean spirited and wholly unnecessary. I always thought Apple thought it best to put itself above MS. Calling out the competition like that gives the appearance of inferiority complex. Puzzling.

Pols want "Truth in Video Game Rating Act"

All Representatives are running for reelection because they are elected to two-year terms. Not all Senators, however, are running because they are elected to six-year terms. Therefore, not all Congressmen/women are running for reelection.

I'm still confused as to why orc breasts and simulated fellatio would trigger such a reaction, but all kinds of mutilation, dismemberment, disembowelment other assorted acts of violence are often overlooked. I really don't get American priorites: Sex is bad and violence is good. Huh.

GameCube dragged by car, works fine afterwards

No, no, no...I AM a stereotypical liberal and this made me immediately think of James Byrd Jr. I'd recommend you not look up that person unless you're very, very curious.

It has absolutely zero to do with video games and everything to do with knee-jerk liberalism. Again, guilty as charged.

My ultra-liberal oversensitive interal offended meter is upset by this. It reminds me of a very disgusting event in recent American history.

Goodbye disc media, hello downloadable games!

I can't wait to download PS4 games through nationwide wifi while I'm driving in my hydrogen car.
