2) People lending the game to other people.
3) Multiple users on the same machine.
So that's 4 different ways somebody could register a trophy without a "new" sale. Not hard to imagine one in two people doing something like that with a game built entirely around a single-player experience. Especially the rental/borrow category.
This needs WAY more data to be any sort of substantial claim. Right now it looks like a whiny dev stretching for an excuse.
Meanwhile, this should also be another prime example of the uselessness of Project $10. EA just released that across EVERY SINGLE ONE of their Online Pass games last year they "only" brought in $15M. That's one of the biggest developers with some major titles.
And even that BARELY would've helped this ONE GAME break even.
