Microsoft defends 120GB Xbox HDD price

Apr 4th 2007 3:14PM (Joystiq)
"That's one thing that you literally can't do with the PS3 as it can't mount my computer's hard drive."

Well, that's funny because my PS3 has full access to my home storage server using smbmount and NFS under Linux. I can stream any media file format/codec, it's quite sexy. I guess you didn't know that you can install another OS on the PS3.

"Yeah they could allow you to use USB but how would that prevent you or anybody else from transfering games or other content to say a friends Xbox 360."

Encryption?

Resident Evil Wii will be seen in 480p, 16:9 glory

Mar 29th 2007 12:19PM (Joystiq)
I don't think you can call 480p @ 16:9 "glorious", but that's just what I think.

PSP firmware 3.30 served up

Mar 28th 2007 3:37PM (Joystiq)
"But the added resolutions should result in better compatibility with PlayStation 3 videos via Remote Play"

There are no compatibility issues with videos being served from the PS3 because everything you see is a single MPEG4 stream being transcoded on-the-fly. If the PS3 doesn't have an issue with a particular video, then neither will the PSP. Maybe I misunderstood, but it sounds like you're suggesting that videos stored on the PS3 are simply being streamed to the PSP for decode, that's not how it works at all.

Italian PS3 owners want their PS2 soccer

"By a show of hands, how many people had to update the firmware on their PS2 to get it working right?"

There were many PS2 firmware updates. Don't you remember from the boot-up screen... if you pressed triangle, you could see the versions of the different firmware modules installed? The thing with the PS2 is that these updates were included on the media you bought and were installed transparently.

Maybe these folks should have searched the compatibility list *before* purchasing a PS3 if was *that* important to them. Can we find anymore "case in point" PS3 FUD to post today?

UK PS3 launch saw £10m in cancellations, still #1

Mar 27th 2007 2:50PM (Joystiq)
I like who even though the PS3 sales in the UK/Europe are nothing short of spectacular, this site STILL tries (and I mean, really, really tries) to spin this in some negative direction. I bet people involved who submit these "articles" are actively *trying* to find anything bad to post about the PS3. It's a truly captivating phenomenon.

I've read comments where the trolls exclaim that the NA launch was a failure because Sony couldn't meet the demand, only shipping a small quantity of units. Then you have readers who comment that this UK/European launch was a failure because there are still consoles available in stores. Simply amazing. In a weird way though, it's kinda cool to own a console that all the trolls HATE - I clearly made the right purchase :)

Microsoft uses beer to illustrate Xbox 360 cost advantage

Mar 23rd 2007 8:04PM (Joystiq)
"38. Becks over here in Canada is a non alchoholic beer you can get at the local Safeway."

Hrm... funny that is, considering how I have a Beck's in my hand right now and the label clearly reads 5% alc./vol.

I'll take the Beck's any day... a quality beer beside a quality console. Fosters is garbage, Beck's is made with 4 ingredients, the way beer is supposed to be made. Mmmmm... tasty.

New Xbox 360 and upcoming add-on HDD to include data cable?

Mar 22nd 2007 11:43AM (Joystiq)
"Yeah, like the Betamax, or the UMD, those were proprietary at all...by the way, how did those turn out?"

How is UMD anymore more "proprietary" than CD, DVD exactly? How was Betamax anymore "proprietary" than VHS again? What's your point? Oh, because Sony is the technology leader behind a format (versus Philips, or Toshiba, etc), then is MUST be proprietary right? Or, if a company introduces a format that doesn't take off, then that obviously makes the format proprietary? Maybe it's because I haven't had my coffee yet, but please help me, explain your logic.

Thanks for coming out, want to play again?
