Joyswag - The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
Jan 29th 2008 9:54PM (Joystiq)USA Today calls out Sony: 'from top dog to underdog in record time'
Mar 20th 2007 9:12PM (Joystiq)For its competitors it has done just fine.
USA Today calls out Sony: 'from top dog to underdog in record time'
Mar 20th 2007 6:59PM (Joystiq)* closed 7 Sony factories
* fired 10,000 Japanese
* decided to add the Blu-Ray to the Playstation
Sony figured that they sold 100 million PS2s and they figured they could throw in the Blu-Ray to the PS3 and charge PS fans $600 before tax, launch late, leave out rumble in the initial launch and not add an HDMI cable!
People are displaying their CONSUMER RIGHT to disagree with Sony's marketing strategy with Blu-ray by not buying it and more-so by bashing its lack of success based on its greed.
You could say, "It needs Blu-Ray for the games...it's the format". Tell that to Capcom and all the other publishers that decided that it would take exclusives away from the PS3.
I wanted a PS3 to play games, not a Blu-Ray player so Sony could "play games with my wallet". When they pull the Blu-ray out (which will have to happen soon) and offer a price equal to the system that plays the same exact games (except some on the 360 are on-line) then maybe I'll pick one up.
I'm going to go play my $50 God of War 2 on my $100 PS2 now.
USA Today calls out Sony: 'from top dog to underdog in record time'
Mar 20th 2007 5:25PM (Joystiq)I want a PS3 for games but not a Blu-Ray player for movies and I'm willing to spend $399.
The many exclusives like Devil May Cry 4 jumping ship to 360 is enough proof that discs themselves are not necessary--except for another Sony format war.
I'm gonna go play God of War 2 ($50) now on my $100 PS2.
Then maybe some Gears later or some Wario w/ the girlfriend. I could watch my crystal clear DVDs on my SD t.v. too.
Zelda music nails the golden ratio
Mar 3rd 2007 6:49PM (Joystiq)The "Golden Ratio" has been used for quite some time and is often refered to as the ratio of beauty.
Maybe the Zelda composer heard the signifigance of the change or chord resolution and applied it at the right spot in the song or measure-- like many composers do.
A simple example of chord resolution in music theory can be explained with the major scale: *Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti...*Do
You start with *Do and resolve the scale by returning to *Do one octave higher. With out the resolution Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti would just sound weird and many composers leave that last note out on purpose to leave the listener with a feeling of a lack of resolve.
The Zelda game/series with such memorable musical pieces and moments in the game where resolve or a psychological accomplishment is met does indeed flourish with beauty and resolve.
Not all gaming music does this! No, the theory cannot be directly applied to all sings.
Otherwise, we would remember many of the tunes we heard from our games. I for instance know that the ghost and goblins song does the same thing... and happens to be a very memorable song to me. I don't recall God of Wars songs... instead I remember the bad ass boss fights!
Groupthink and Zelda
Nov 19th 2006 5:57AM (Joystiq)please:copy, paste & read
I remember reading that Jeff was getting the review on a Game Spot forum thread--and I knew this was comming. I ran from gamespot and I'm never going back after the 8.8. I'm tired of their biasness and I'm acting on it. I took them of my navigation bar and I will never visit their site--and I encourage others to do so. As for what I read from Vlad? There is always someone at the party that knows howto stir up some $#!+.
Reggie Fils-Aime promoted to NOA president
May 25th 2006 8:39PM (Joystiq)There's a reason why he invented "Ilove the eighties", it was because it was then that he began calling himfself Reggie. No one got the last name... Now, after climbing the corporate ladder, Reggie is the President of NOA. Still, no one can pronounce his name, rightfully giving him the praise he deserves, especially after getting his a$$ beatin' for it for years as a kid. Just wanting something as little as a little name recognition after all these years, after all his success wouldn't be much to ask for, right? So now, Reggie is kicking your a$$es and taking your names!
Kutaragi: PlayStation 3 is "too cheap"
May 17th 2006 3:24PM (Joystiq)#40
if you buy that you're a fool. I dare you to pick up a few shares! In the financial world investments wether it be in a portfolio or a product companies need to strive for risk aversion.
Taxes are always something business strive to reduce(you make it sound like they just invented taxes)...so the tax dollars excuse is just smoke being blown up our assses by Sony for poor performance. The currency change has even been favorable for them. Look at their NYSE ticker...they're an ADS.
Sony is taking a huge gamble trying to ride on the success of the PS2. They're sticking alot off eggs in one basket. If Blu-Ray flops (well... like Beta-max, laser-disc, Sony's music division, UMD and...) Sony flops. They are hoping to capatalize on the royalties (an estimated 2 billion annually--in the WSJ) from the Blu-Ray not the PS3.
On a world wide perspective (macroeconomics) I would argue that during a recession (WSj reports that prices are slowly inflating already) and the amount of early adopters won't be viable for Sony's plan. The expanding markets like China and India
won't be something they can penetrate with that price point.
In microeconomics, it would seem that they would need at least 10 million consoles sold to get Blu-Ray penetration Vs. the lead HD already has (thats a Billion dollar bet...). Otherwise Hollywood will go with where the money is. Let's hope those Nvidia chips (quoted that only 4 mill are possible)will be there on time... just like for the 360.
So as regards for your 3rd grade analysis..."Sony has actually had more profit in the last year in its sales, but higher taxes cut in and turned those profits moot. It's also a little thing called preparing for the future..." it really doesn't stand in economic terms, which means you are just a fanboy.
Really, put your money where your mouth is. Go to the Ameritrade site and open an account. It takes ten minutes. I'm sure you'll make a bundle.
HA!

Looks like Sony and Microsoft are not fairing so well after E3.
I wonder if those Sony fanboys' opinions are "worth" as much as those investments!

Heck, even go back a little, say to the May 8th and ninth. The company as a whole is'nt doing too well. They're closing 7 factories and firing over 10,000 people. After a chunk being ripped out of the Sony music division with the "non-disc" MP3 format Apple offered with its music player, the i-pod (oh, and no spyware either)and it's online service... Sony hasn't been very profitable at all.
Let's hope they sell more of those LCD t.v.s, alot more!
HA!
Why don't you hop on ameritrade and pick up a few shares while it's hot!
Prediction: MS offers to buy Sony in 3 years.
