I apologise for the bluntness of my previous comment. That was simply what I said as soon as I saw the authors name.
Ok, knee-jerk reaction out of the way. Now that I bothered to read the post, and the article it links to, I have to point out some of the false logic :
"Additionally, sometimes using the motion sensitive controller is awkward to the player and doubly so to observers. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkachi 2 is a prime example of this, with punching and "Kamehameha wave" motions required to make your character fight. While this may be the thing YouTube 15-minute celebrities are made of, it's hard to imagine it catching on long-term with the prime 18 - 34 male demographic"
But, the 18-34 year old male demographic is NOT who Nintendo are after with the Wii. They are after my mum.
"Wii games certainly don't look bad; in fact, by current-gen standards they look quite decent. However, when compared to the top 360 and PS3 titles, especially on an HDTV, the Wii is blown out of the water. Games like Gears of War and Heavenly Sword absolutely pop and the Wii just doesn't have the CPU and GPU power to match that."
My mum will never see Gears of War on an HDTV.
"The point is that established support really does carry weight in console wars,"
The success of the PlayStation proves that statement wrong.
PLEASE, somebody, let this be Vladimirs last post on joystiq. The guy is incapable of providing any kind of subjective opinion. His crusade against this console is losing you readers.
Oh good, the UK gets shafted again. A conversion rate of 100 Wii points per £1, when that amount should be buying me 190 Wii points. And, unless I missed it, there is still no confirmation if we can play WiiVC games online or not. Bomberman online would be worth £6 ($11) to me, but I'll be pissed that I can't get it for the £3 that the Americans can get it for. Offline only = No sale. (I can already play Bomberman multiplayer on several of my consoles.)
Looks like I'll be buying less of them than I originally thought I would. BAD move, Nintendo.
This is actually a very brave move by EA, and I personally have no problem with it AS THINGS STAND. If you pay the 200 points to max out your character, you are still gonna lose online to thos who took the time to learn the game through actually playing it. I say let those who don't have the time to unlock everything buy what they want, as long as there are no achievments connected to unlocking anything you can buy. Completely and utterly fair play from EA, IMHO.
The most interesting thing to me is why has nobody complained about Chromehounds improved rocket launcher? Pay 100 MS points, and you have an instant advantage over people who don't. THAT is dangerous. People moaned about horse armour, which was completely unnecessary because your horse kicks arse without it. People let the potential creation of a 2-tier online society sail past without even mentioning it. (Whilst I admittedly do not own Chromehounds, and therefore can not comment on how much better the new rocket launcher is, I have seen this item for sale in the marketplace, and have summised from the information given as to what may be possible. I am happy to be corrected if I am mistaken.)
Well, I like the idea. Provided the disc itself is cheap enough, I see no problem with it at all. In fact, it would make things easier for those of us who like to play online. Since, 99% of online will be on the fastest or longest track, with all 6 players in the fastest car. Why they hell would I want to spend more on all the Mazda Demios and Sprinter Truenos, that I will never drive?
I have at least 7 machines on which I can watch movies at this moment in time, and I can also go to the cinema. (It's an old-fashioned concept, I realise, but I do still enjoy it somewhat.) So, releasing a console without the ability to play movies does not concern me. If HD-DVD, BluRay, or even optical cubes become the standard format, then I will get a player. I want GAMES! Plus, I'm not alone in this.
I have 20 or so friends on XBox Live at the moment. I think I have only ever seen one of them online with the status listed as 'Watching a movie'. And certainly not more than twice. Console manufacturers, blogs, and news websites are vastly overplaying that card. People don't want movie playback from their consoles. They want GAMES!
So, out of 9 launch titles, 2 of them are going to support 4 players? And, 2 titles will support wi-fi connection to offer online play? Meaning, nearly half of the first-party launch titles are utilising the features that Nintnedo said they would? Interesting how this is seen as dissapointing. Particularly when you consider that 3 of the remaining titles are essentially single-player experiences, which could only ever have multiplayer tacked on afterwards.
Blogworthy? Probably. Newsworthy? Probably not. Joystiqworthy? Sadly, as of late, definitely. Why do you have so much hatred for the Wii?
I couldn't win anyway, but there is no way I deserved to with this lot! Excellent work, and my honourable mention is good enough for me. Starfox joke is great!
Not only do we get the Wii last, and pay more for it than anyone else, but now we can't win Joystiq contests, either? Living in the UK has way too many disadvantages! I like "You got red on you", but I happen to use that line a lot anyway.
