Toshiba officially bows out of next-gen format war
Feb 19th 2008 11:26AM (Joystiq Playstation)It's really over, folks - Toshiba drops HD DVD
Feb 17th 2008 1:49AM (Joystiq Playstation)The Blu-ray feature for the PS3 film content was indeed a Trojan Horse and a fairly gilded one at that. Sony gambled in placing the Blu-Ray drive in each PS3, ensuring that the installed base for Blu-Ray was 1:1 with PS3 installed gaming base, which numbers now in the many millions. If you remember, many were upset that the drive was in there, making the unit $200 more expensive: said they didn't want to watch movies on their game machine. But when netflix and blockbuster started offering HD, that all seemed to change. Though putting the Blu-Ray drive in seemed nuts at the time and Kenny K. got canned for it..it's the main reason Toshiba has capitulated today.
Sony is now going to reap significant dividends from increased PS3 sales and royalties on Blu-Ray royalties: it's a stunning victory.
Remember it was the Greeks ability to outmaneuver the Trojans by thinking "outside the box" (or rather inside?) by playing the Trojans egotistical desire for tribute.
We didn't want tribute, we wanted a gaming machine. But instead of getting our throats slit in our sleep like the Trojans, we got a really, really good movie player. A much better deal. Tragically, it's Toshiba that lays bleeding out into its beer this evening.

Feb 10th 2008 12:49AM (Joystiq Playstation)If you haven't played Shadow you really have missed out on one of the best 'experiences' on PS2. Epic in scope, achingly beautiful at times. When's the last time you choked up playing a video game? And I'm not talking Devil May Cry which will indeed make you cry out of frustration (hurts so good!) I'm talking choking up because the game made you *care* about the characters, and the place, and all you had accomplished? Do something wonderful and get this game!

Jan 26th 2008 2:05AM (Joystiq Playstation)I'm an old geezer born in 1968 and I had no problem getting through...I was thrown for a loop, though, when...'the twist' happened, and it took awhile for me to find a new playstyle to deal. You just need to work on your chops...go old school and try the first Phantom spider mini-boss on PS3's Devil May Cry 1 (took me a week at 2 hours a night to finally get past him)...then come back to Uncharted and it will seem to be in slow motion.
Use your cover (critical!), use your environment (i.e. explosive barrels), use choke points, and headshots do count, if sometimes less effective than in other games.
Good luck, old man!

Jan 10th 2008 2:36PM (Joystiq Playstation)I bought the 60GB at launch, and ran it on my 27" SD (dont' snicker!) for about a year. Strangley, I would buy just about every decent game that came out, but I would only play a level or two becuase I knew I was missing out on the HD experience and didn't want to "waste" the game.
I kept carting my PS3 over to my dad's house to watch it on his glorious 1080p 52" Sony DLP, only to go back home and grumble to myself how much SD sucked.
An aside: if you have not seen what 1080p movies look like, you simply must find a friend with an 1080p HD set and a PS3 or HD-DVD player to see for yourself. It's astounding, really, and completely spoils your for SD. Watching AeonFlux, I had to resist the urge to scratch my eyeballs, and I found that I was unconsciously grinding my teeth. That's good video!
Eventually I just couldn't stand it any longer. I was compelled to get an HD set so I could see what I was missing and finally begin playing my library of partially-played ps3 games and Blu-ray movies. I sprung for the Aquos 32" LC-D32343U 720p which was $650 for a week or so at BestBuy.
I would not be surprised if many who bought a PS3 without HD experience a similar compulsion: It's impossible to hold out forever.
Activision wants $$$ for PS3 guitar patch
Dec 20th 2007 1:09PM (Joystiq Playstation)You said: "We believe we should be compensated for the use of our technology."
I say: "I believe you will be justly compensated in ill will."
It's a bonehead move. Making the patch available will not cost Activision sales of GH. Sell the GH peripheral to a PS3 user and its likely just a matter of time before they buy the GH standalone game...especially when they want to rock out alone.
But to announce you want to get paid for the use of your technology on the PS3? When the 360 GHIII Rock Band controller is fully compatible with Rock Band on the same? Stupefyingly short-sighted..if I have to wait till the end of January for my second Harmonix guitar controller, I will..but why would I buy GHIII and a GHIII controller at that point?
Mis dos centavos.
