Cingular lights up 3G in New York City
Jun 30th 2006 11:02AM (Engadget Mobile)I signed a 1 yr contract for my Verizon EVDO card earlier this year, so I have some time. My voice plan contract with T-Mo is up at the end of August. I was reluctantly considering switching over to
the Q now and tethering, so I can get rid of my EVDO card... but with this news, I think I'll hold off.
T-Mobile isn't the best especially outside of major
markets, but it's great where I need it and very well priced. I prefer GSM carriers because: 1) I tend to switch phones a lot, 2) most of
the WM5 devices (particularly those from HTC) are GSM, 3) I like being able to use my HTC Universal + 5600 + cheap, old v66 phone depending on my
needs at the time (e.g., if I go to the beach, I can take the old phone without worrying about it). T-Mo has roaming agreements with Cingular and is cheaper, plus it was the first with good GSM coverage in NYC.
Speaking of agreements, AllTel does advertise "America's Largest Network", but Cingular claims it has the "Largest Digital Network". My girlfriend actually asked the other day whether Cingular changed its name to Alltel, remembering that I told her awhile back about the switch back to
AT&T.
