Gabe Newell calls PS3 'waste of everybody's time'

I have no problems with him expressing his opinion. In fact, I respect him for being vocal about it.

HD DVD group: Cheaper PS3 won't help Blu-ray sales

Oct 10th 2007 5:06PM (Joystiq Playstation)
The majority of people buying the PS3 are buying it to play games, not as a Blu-Ray player. The Blu-Ray functionality is just an added bonus for most people. This means there are quite a few people who own a PS3 and will not ever buy a Blu-Ray movie, or if they do, it will only be a select few titles. (I know you are thinking, well hey, that's BS because I bought X amount of Blu-Rays already). And if that's the case, you are not the typical PS3 owner.

Blu-Ray movies outsell HD-DVD's at a ratio of about 2:1 in North America. That's great right? Well, including the PS3, it's thought that the current ratio of Blu-Ray players to HD-DVD players in North American homes is about 5:1. Do you see the problem here? Why aren't Blu-Ray movies pounding HD-DVD's at the same clip of about 5:1 instead of 2:1? Could it be that the true HD Video consumer actually prefers HD-DVD to Blu-Ray? Maybe some of you people should actually do some research. Also, the first stand alone Blu-Ray players are going to be obsolete when Blu-Ray movies move up to the next standard, because the players can't read these new Blu-Ray Discs, and the machines themselves are not upgradeable like the PS3 or all standalone HD-DVD players.

Also, ask yourselves this... If Blu-Ray is so great, why are SONY movies showing up on HD-DVD in foreign markets? Underworld: Evolution (as one example) is available on HD-DVD (not for release in the US). This is not a mockup, photoshop, or coming soon title. It's an actual SONY movie on HD-DVD that you can purchase now.

Just food for thought. I personally don't care which format wins. My preference is that both of them stick around for awhile. There are some things I like about HD-DVD, and some I like about Blu-Ray. At least if we have both formats, I have a choice. Not a single format forced upon me.

PS3 loses Monster Hunter 3 to Wii

Oct 10th 2007 2:18PM (Joystiq Playstation)
I'd be too busy for this game anyway, what with playing Halo 3, Bioshock, The Orange Box and Call of Duty 4. Oh yeah, those are XBox 360 games. Maybe I'll fire up the PS3 to watch Transformers. Oops, can't do that. Hmmm, well I suppose I could just play some Q*Bert.

Report: Blu-ray/HD DVD war to end in 18 months

Sep 26th 2007 2:13PM (Joystiq Playstation)
I'm sorry, but these analysts are usually talking out of their ass. Why 18 months, and not 19, or 14? Why is it exactly 18 months? Sony does not need to have a Blu-Ray player at $250 to win the format war. The only way to supplant regular dvd as the format of choice, is to reach their price points. Until this happens, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will continue to be a niche product. It will be years upon years before one of the HD formats is accepted as the defacto standard.

Personally, I'd rather see both formats succeed, as each of them have advantages over the other. That way I can choose which format I prefer, instead of being forced to accept one I don't want. (i.e. 300 on HD-DVD has more options over the Blu-Ray version, and therefore I would choose HD-DVD in this case).

Also, Blu-Ray movies are not selling in the amounts they should be. I've seen reports from a few of these so-called "analysts" that show Blu-Ray discs outselling HD-DVD by a 2:1 ratio. These same analysts put Blu-Ray players in homes at a 5:1 ratio. If that is the case, why aren't Blu-Ray discs outselling HD-DVD discs at a 5:1 ratio???? In foreign markets, Sony movies are showing up on HD-DVD. With this muddying up of the market, I don't see how either format can possibly win out over the other in a mere 18 months.

Some of these "analysts" need to get a real job. I'd really like to see what research they actually did to come to these conclusions, if just to laugh at it.

Final Fantasy XIII finally operating on PS3 hardware

System seller???

Uh, no.

I would not buy a PS3 just to play this game. Not that it matters, since I already have one. This game isn't even on my radar as far as I'm concerned. Never liked the FF games, and I still won't.

Blu-ray movie releases for the week of Sept. 16th

Sep 19th 2007 10:00AM (Joystiq Playstation)
I have some questions regarding Blu-Ray. Currently, Blu-Ray discs are selling at about a 2:1 ratio to HD-DVD discs. That's awesome, right? Well, Blu-Ray players are generally thought to own a 5:1 ratio advantage over HD-DVD players in homes. Do you see the problem? Shouldn't Blu-Ray discs be outselling HD-DVD at a greater margin, due to the fact that there are more players in the homes? Or could it be that the real movie lovers are the HD-DVD owners, and the Blu-Ray owners are more casual purchasers? If I am a movie studio (ideally, I would support both formats. My movie would then be available to all customers.) it would seem to me that HD-DVD is actually the way to go right now. If there are more movies out on Blu-Ray, and only a casual interest from the consumer base, would tell me that there is actually less opportunity for my movie to be sold. Less choices on HD-DVD coupled with a more dedicated consumer base (unless someone can really explain to me why there is such a wide discrepancy in the player and software sold ratios) would mean that my movie would actually sell better on HD-DVD. Of course, this does not go for large blockbusters like Transformers, which will sell well on any format. This certainly explains why studios would switch to HD-DVD exclusivity. ($150 million will only last for so long).

Another thing, if Blu-Ray is so great, why are Sony movies showing up on HD-DVD???? I've seen a few already, such as Underworld: Evolution for sale. This is a non-US HD-DVD, but as they are region free, it doesn't really matter. And these aren't coming soon dvd's, or photoshop mockups. They are real, tangible, Sony movies on HD-DVD for release outside of the US. Kind of makes you wonder if Sony really trusts that Blu-Ray will be the winning format.

Reminder: win tons of 360 accessories
