IBM to future game makers: Stay in school

Dec 1st 2006 12:54PM (Joystiq)
With all the support IBM has given to software through things like Eclipse and Linux kernel contributions, this is just a drop in the bucket of good things they've done.

That sandbox mode looks like fun. Garry's Mod for the Wii?

Huge, ugly antenna increases Wii's wireless range

Nov 29th 2006 5:25PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
In the article it plainly says that the antenna didn't do squat for the reception. They blame it on loss due to their pigtail. Loss due to the pigtail is certainly a factor, but I'm thinking that the Wii's wireless setup probably just isn't all that bad anyway, so it would be tough to improve upon it. I think they said the gain of the antenna was only 5dB though, so they could certainly do better.

If I were them, I'd get a big 2' dish that gets 19dB like I have attached to my computer. It really boosted my signal and it would probably do the same for a Wii.

Not only that, but it's not compatible with the component cables from the Cube. Kinda sucks, but I'm gonna end up buying them anyway.

Wii devkit shared

Oct 2nd 2006 1:47PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Game designers and developers are often not the same people. The designer's job is to figure out what is fun and what the game should be, while the job of the developer is to make the code that makes the magic happen. I wouldn't at all be surprised if the artsy designers are Apple users, but the develpers are going to write the code on whatever sort of system they like. I don't make video games, but when I write software I usually write a paragraph or draw a picture that describes how my program works, then type the actual code into the computer. I tend to use Eclipse in Linux because it works best for me, but everyone has different preferences.

Doesn't look like much fun, but at least the music was good.

Top 50 handheld games of the century

Super Circuit was an excellent game. It took everything from Super Mario Kart and added a whole lot more. I'm glad to see it did well.
