I worked at GAME as a trainee for a week and it's like this: Recieve (console) game, open up plastics, remove Disc and manual, put it in a plastic cd bag thingy, and then you put it in the correct order in the security shelf behind the counter. This is not done to PC games because there are no returns for those games (if they have been opened), they simply have alarms in them. They do not open the plastic to make sure that only sealed copies can be taken back to the store for a refund.
This whole thing is done because of three things: 1. Security No one can take a disc if it doesnt exist 2. Stock info You can easily find a certain game in an alphabetized stack, not having to wade through the shelfs to find it 3. Advertisement Show the game to make sure people know about it, even if it's just a display copy
