Swype Beta for Android opens up again -- don't miss out this time!

Dec 21st 2010 8:19PM (Download Squad)
I don't suppose this includes some way to get updates if your phone shipped with Swype rolled in, like my Captivate? I'm stuck with a build from... June? as far as I know... :(

ASCII-based Dwarf Fortress is the future of video games?

I read about this at Dan's Data a few months ago, when he was discussing Roguelikes. I installed it, excited at the prospect. I was overwhelmed -- there's no in-game tutorial whatsoever, they just drop you in. There's like 60 command keys, and to play well you need most of them. There's some web pages about it, but.... Maybe I'm spoiled, but I've grown used to having my hand held a bit to start with. I deleted DF because I felt like I couldn't make heads or tails of it. Maybe I'll get up the gumption to try it again, but I don't think it will happen soon. If you want to be that ambitious, I think you have to meet your players halfway.

Metareview: Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords (PSP, DS)

I can't wrap my brain around the complete mechanics. I keep studying the screen for a full minute, making a move, then the computer gets 5 "4-combo" moves in a row. I hope I get better, but damn... it makes me remember how I used to only get good scores in the *timed* mode of Bejewled.

How to make the DS better

Re: WPA support, that would obviously be better, but I've got a workaround. I use the router Verizon gave me with my FiOS to hook up my laptops and Wii, and my old wireless router (market value: about 10 bucks) hangs off one of the Verizon router ports on a different IP. The new router uses WPA, and the old one uses WEP. Both use MAC filtering, so the threat of having a WEP router is minimal -- nobody can watch my laptops' traffic since it is WPA-protected, nobody can steal my internet access because even if they crack the WEP key they can't get out (unless they clone a MAC address I'm using, but that's not a big threat), and I don't care if people see my Axim (PDA) web traffic (currently the only WEP device on the network).

Square Enix party details make us want to buy a ticket to Tokyo

I have a 360 and not a PS3, so I'm biased, but:

I think it's in Square's best interest to push FFXIII to as many consoles as possible -- it should hit the Wii too, if they can "turn down the sliders" on the graphics enough -- because it's their flagship brand, and that's that. They live or die by fanboy perception of FF, and for each Wii-only or 360-only kid who can't afford to buy every console that comes down the pike, they've lost not just a sale, but a heart. They might lose 50-60 bucks on the game that doesn't get bought, but they might lose a further $100+ in t-shirts, books, action figures, etc. that the kid doesn't get because he couldn't play the game. And that's bad business.

So, uh, don't make me buy a PS3, Square. Please!
