Don't get gametap if you're interested in the newer, Windows-based games. I have problems with them frequently.
HOWEVER, if you want some good old-school action, this is THE place to get it. I've been a subscriber for months. One night, I had my media center PC hooked up to a 50" plasma and me and about 5 friends played Rootbeer Tapper for like 4 hours straight.
Good times.
p.s. Cosmic Ark owns. I think I still have the #12 high score.
I think people are confusing "immersion" with "realism". A game with a HUD can be just as, or more, immersive than a game without a HUD. In the case of the screenshot above, there is a whole lot going on and you have to pay more attention to multiple things... that's immersive, or more engaging.
This would only be successfull if you had your choice of which generation to play. We all have our favorites. Personally, I wouldn't touch the game if it wasn't set in the TNG erra with Borg, Klingons, Betazoids and Ferengi.
But I do think it has some real potential for an MMORPG setting. I would enjoy the variety of choosing between the scale of deep space or a more personal away-team level of play.
I remember the "mode 7 graphics" in Super Ghouls n' Ghosts on the SNES. It freaked me out when the entire level began rotating. I thought it was amazing at the time.
Saving: Hopefully the next-gen consoles will fix this, but why hasn't anyone figured out save-games? I just got Tiger Woods 06 and it's like "Do you want to save?" (10 second delay) "Are you sure you want to save?" (10 second delay) "Do you want to overwrite?" (20 second delay). Some games do have it figured out, but it should be a standard thing by now...
