Portal, Team Fortress 2 Live at Leipzig

Aug 10th 2006 7:17AM (Joystiq Xbox)
Can't wait. When HL2 came out I seriously looked into how much it would cost me to build a pc that I could play it on. It was too much for me at the time, so I resigned myself that I probably would not get to play HL2, at least not for a long time. And then HL2 was ported to the xbox, and boy was I hella excited. And it was to be released around the 360 launch, and the 360 would be back-compat for certain games; HL2 being one of them. Well I spent Thanksgiving playing HL2. But not on my 360, but on my xbox. My 360 pre-order got screwed and I did not get my 360 until the second week of January. Back to the point; HL2 on the xbox was good but not the greatest. The load times were painful, but overall it was alot of fun to play and I'm glad I got to play it finally. Now we hear that HL2 and Episodes 1/2 etc... are coming to the 360. Fucking hella sweet. HL2 and all the rest on my 360 in Hi-Def, it will indeed be "hella".

Get your Tra5hTa1k in live, human form

Aug 3rd 2006 7:52AM (Joystiq)
I think the problem was the setting. It didn't seem like there were alot of gamers in the audience. When he asked if there were any 360 owners in the audience the response was dead silence. They then proceed to reel off a bunch of 360 related jokes; and surprise, surprise, no laughter. Now you don't have to own a 360 to be a gamer, but "hardcore gamers" usually are well informed about all aspects of gaming. I don't own a Wii, but I can appreciate a good Wii joke. Tra5hTa1k are obviously gamers, it seemed to me that the audience wasn't.

Ubisoft PR guy on why Beyond Good & Evil tanked

Aug 3rd 2006 7:25AM (Joystiq)
This is one of those games that when I first saw it in the store I quickly passed it over. I didn't know anything about, and from the box art on the front I was turned off. Looking at the back of the box I still was very underwhelmed, except that I saw that is was a Ubisoft release. That made me pause for a second, but I quickly moved on.
Then I kept reading about the game, and all the reviews that said it was something different and should be given a try. I kept on seeing it at my local store and kept on passing it up. I guess about two years ago I was in my local game store looking to buy a game. It was the summer and there had been no good new releases in awhile, so I decided to catch up on some games that I had missed when they first got released. And there was BG&E. A used copy, on sale for like 10 bucks. What the hell, it's only ten bucks. Bought it, went home, put in the xbox, and gave it my attention for the rest of the day. At first I was not too impressed. It was okay, but nothing spectacular. Soon some new games came out and I bought them and had my attention diverted for awhile. One weekend last summer I was really bored and I was going thru my games to find something to play. There was BG&E. I had never finished it. I spent the rest of the weekend knocking the game out, and by the time I finished I was glad I gave the game another chance. I would not place it in the pantheon of all time greats, but for gamers it something a little different and deserves some attention.

Dead Rising intro, good and creepy

Jul 24th 2006 7:45AM (Joystiq Xbox)
I have been looking forward to this game since I first heard about. Killing zombies, lots and lots of zombies. How cool is that. I played the trailer I downloaded from marketplace for my wife a few weeks ago, and even she got excited. My wife is not a gamer, although she will play sometimes, but she can get into zombie movies. And after she watched the trailer, she thought the idea of being able to pick up almost any object in the surroundings to use as a weapon both hilarious and awesome. I can hardly wait till tomorrow when I can go buy this game, finally.

Just watch this Just Cause video

Could be fun, but I'm a little perplexed about this guys parachute that, when opened on the ground, lets him fly up in the air. I thought that parachutes let you glide down, (with the exception of para-sailing, but that requires something pulling the person wearing the parachute fast enough to give them an updraft). I know, I'm nitpicking, but I am curious to see how they explain this guy's ability to use a parachute to fly up from from the ground. Still, after checking out the gameplay videos, it looks like it might a fun game.

Clive Barker's Jericho announced for next-gen consoles

Jul 21st 2006 3:30PM (Joystiq)
"3. He didn't do so hot with the comics though. I'm not sure how much of that was him and how much was Marvel and the regular writers of the books."

You will need to go back a bit further than anything Clive Barker did with Marvel, try the work he did with Steve Niles at Eclipse like Tapping The Vein or some of the graphic adaptations of his short stories from The Books Of Blood. There you will find his genius shining thru.

The mecca of used game stores

"3. Actually that was five words.

Posted at 2:04AM on Jul 15th 2006 by Hwyowl"

Uh, no it was not it, was two and then a period.

"Two words: Oompa loompas. Trillions of them."

See. Two words, (oompa loompas), and a period. Then on to the next sentance.

Sorry for the asinine response, but I just could not let it pass.

Microsoft lacks confidence in Japan, losing next-gen battle without competition

Jul 13th 2006 2:41PM (Joystiq)
Let's go back in time shall we. Let's say how about a few years ago when a software company announced that they were going to make a gaming console. Anyone remember that? Nobody took MS seriously when they announced the xbox, it was considered a bad joke, rather bad form actually. I know that I did not think they had a shot in hell at having any success, and most people thought along similar lines. All hype and no substance. Where did MS get off trying to compete with Sony's playstation brand and Nintendo's legacy? Who the hell were these upstarts? Sure they had created a monoply with Windows, but that is a far cry from Donkey Kong and it's brethren that followed. I remeber thinking just how god awful ugly the xbox was and the first game I remember associated with the xbox was Bloodwake. Not something that would make me run right out and drop a few hundred bucks. About three weeks after the xbox released my initial PS2 crapped out on me. I trundled myself off to a local electronics mega store and went to the video game section to replace my PSdeuce with another PSdeuce. And there it was. Black and piss-neon green ugliness: XBox. And about ten games. That day I went home and plugged in my new console and fired up one of the four new games I bought; Metal Gear Solid 2.
Screw the xbox. When I stood there looking at it all I could think of was Turbografix. I thought to myself, no way am I getting stuck with another console that nobody makes games for and just kinda dies a sad pathetic life next to my tv that plays commercials for other game systems.
Her we are a few years later and the xbox survived. Now we have the 360 and the PStrey is in the pipeline along the Wii. Has MS conquered the Japanese market? Of course not, but to even have a discussion topic like this was unimaginable just a few short years ago. MS, like Sony, is in this for the long haul. And they have proven themselves quick learners. The 360 is not reviled by all and people talk about the console war and wonder if the mighty might not have slipped, with the upstart usurper being looked at as a formidable competitor. Do not underestimate MS. Do you think that Levi's were the most popular brand in it's first six years in Japan? No, they were not. But now some of the biggest collectors are in Japan.
MS strategy evolves over decades, not in one year. Right now it's 2006. Let's see how MS is doing in another six years.

Video of E3 Mass Effect demo hits XBLM

Jul 13th 2006 7:23AM (Joystiq)
Of course it all comes down to gameplay. Bioware has a good track record and everytime I hear something "new" about Mass Effect it seems to indicate good things are on the horizon. Personally I'm a little doubtful about the holiday 2006 release date. With games like this and other upcoming 360 games, I'm starting to get a smile on my face when I think about what I'll be playing in the near future.

Get that WoW angst off your chest

Jul 6th 2006 1:33PM (Joystiq)
25 pages and counting of comments like the above. After reading thru about half the comments I was reminded why I have not made the commitment to play WoW. There are not enough hours in the day for me to play WoW, I finally finished Oblivion the other week and I'm looking forward to Prey next week. I like playing many different games, and that consumes too much time as it is. I have work, my wife, our houses that require my attention, and now we are becoming guardians of three kids, when on earth would I play WoW?
