Mr Khan: I didn't say the analyst is right. I think I understand his reasoning. I doubt Wii Resort is going to make a big in impact in terms of console sales. It should sell well to existing owners however. Regardless we will know in a few months. If Wii sales drops it won't show up just yet in NDP figures.
This analyst has a good point. Nintendo Wii have experienced a dramatic drop in sales in Japan. According to Mediacreate they have sold 336K so far this year. Last years sales for the same period was 888K. Sales are trending downwards as well.
Don't say it's the economy. XBox is doing much better. PS3 is doing fine as well. It's only Nintendo that has this huge sales decline.
I think this is his reasoning: Japan was the first market to get Wii in such quantities it became available everywhere. It's not a hard to get console anymore. This is now starting to happen here as well. I'm in Canada and the Futureshop I visit has a big stack of Wii everytime I'm there. Go back a few months and it wasn't like that. Maybe we will see a similar sales decline.
As I can't stand Mario I would enjoy that immensely.
Apple iPhone has the potential to grap portions of the market from DS/PSP. Another point is that if Apple has some success here they will be followed by others. Smartphones powered by Windows Mobile should be able to handle games for instance.
The iPhone is definitely a threat. Countering it by releasing a new "DS" won't change that.
darth balls: The article was about console sales in Japan. PS2 & 360 is part of that. I was merely wondering if we might see the same sales trends here (Wii and PS2).
Is no one noticing how the PS2 is doing in Japan. PS2 sales there are really slowing down. If Xbox360 sells a bit better it will overtake it.
Regarding Xbox 360 sales in Japan. They are selling a lot better than last year. I know it doesn't say much but it's a start.
I check Amazon Japan fairly regularly. Just to get a feel for what sells in Japan. Wii is not supply constrained, Amazon has it in stock all the time. The 360 on the other hand has been mostly out of stock for the last 3 weeks.
One wonder if and then the trends from Japan will show up in Europe and US. I refer to slowing PS2/Wii sales.
I just looked at Amazon Japans bestsellers. They have suddenly discounted the 360 Pro to 30000 yen. It was in position 40 a few slots before Nintendo WII. Note it was not the newly advertised bundle.
Would say it will have an impact. They might even overtake PS2 in Japan next year.

Xbox 360 outsold PS3 in Japan last week
Nov 9th 2007 12:31PM (Joystiq)I looked at Amazon Japan a few times during last week. The 360 was shown as out of stock every time. Maybe Microsoft was taken by surprise as well.
