EU directive aims to make all batteries removable, even THAT battery

Oct 7th 2008 1:17PM (Engadget)
This is great, however it is only a directive and it isn't the law. This does mean that Apple doesn't necessarily have to abide, as in there are no penalties for not conforming to the directive's specifications. That's not to say it's not a bad move, I certainly welcome it.

Get your 2.0 firmware on ... early!

I am on Pay and Go in the UK and I updated the my iPhone. It didn't pop up anything to do with doing a 'Full' backup so I'm not sure about that.

Anyways I forgot about activation, but I had an O2 sim card in it (be it Pay and Go) and went through the normal activation process and it activated it fine (bizarre reason) even though I don't have a monthly iPhone plan.

It's syncing my applications now and I hope to be able to test them out and see what it's like. I might go back to 1.1.4 if I get bored with it or I miss the customisability.

Interestingly enough whilst my Pay and Go simcard didn't used to work without some baseband hackery, it's working fine now.

It's run here too usually, but I'd like to know when they'll start the promotion. I'm starting uni in September and I'll be getting a MacBook, but at this point I'd like to wait to see when the offer will start here.

TUAW Responds: iPhone LoJack

Feb 22nd 2008 1:13PM (TUAW.com)
Right, so it seems to work now, except only on WiFi. I don't have EDGE coverage at my house, so it only uses GPRS. Can that be a problem?

When I run /var/root/bin/tweet from the terminal on the iPhone, after long delay, I get this:
curl: (52) Empty reply from server.

I can get on the internet though through Safari, so I don't know what's causing the problem.

If you are getting an error such as:

zsh: exec format error: /var/root/bin/findme

download the findme binary from Erica's FTP site using Firefox not Safari. This has happened before because of the way Safari handles downloading of files. Weird. Thanks Erica!

It isn't working for me either. tweet itself works, however when it goes to execute findme I get:

zsh: exec format error: /var/root/bin/findme

What's up with this?

How to enable DVD playback in Ubuntu

Feb 10th 2008 1:30PM (Download Squad)
I recently did this for a friend, and I only used the second line in Ubuntu (gutsy gibbon).

And even VLC requires the libread3 to be installed. I was actually a bit annoyed at that, I thought it would work with VLC no matter what.

After Effects 7 users: QuickTime 7.4 update a nono

This has been mis-reported. All it does is cause a file permission change, which means the permissions are set incorrectly on some files, so when you try to import or add a file in AA, it gives a error explaining you do not have the correct permissions, as in UNIX permissions.

Nothing to do with DRM.

Shame the quote is miss-quoted. It is actually "My eyes! The goggles do nothing!". There is no 'they' in there. Oh well.

Gotta love McBain though!

Boosting your iPhone speaker volume

Peter: I tried it, and I didn't notice a difference either. I even restarted the iPhone to make sure.

Oh well!
