May 22nd 2010 3:50PM (TUAW.com)This is his original point, which almost every replier has blown out of proportion. If you want to be completely up to date, you will have to buy an new iPhone. I'm not saying that he's right in claiming that Android > iPhone, I'm just saying that he's right about the updates. Calm the fuck down, guys.
Seven ways PC World is wrong about the iPhone-Android matchup
May 22nd 2010 3:46PM (TUAW.com)Plus, all you need with Google is an email account for most of their services. I don't see how that makes them Big Brother. Please explain.
Seven ways PC World is wrong about the iPhone-Android matchup
May 22nd 2010 3:27PM (TUAW.com)I understand that this is a blog for Apple fans, but does that really mean you have to a) publish a public retort to an article posted elsewhere that has nothing to do with the site, b) defend the iPhone OS at every opportunity, regardless of whether or not you have all the facts (an ironic point, considering how often you claim PC World has forgotten to check facts.) or c) straight up /attack/ another site? And for what? Because they aren't as impressed with something you love? Where is that provincialism again?
I'll be upfront- I use a Nexus One as my phone. However, I use a MacBook as my operating computer, an iPad as my portable computer, an iPod touch as a to-go device, and will be soon upgrading to a MacBook Pro. I say this because I know that someone will not read this and simply say "omg y r u even here go back 2 androidfans.com" or claim that I hate Apple. I don't. I don't even hate you guys. I just hate this "article." That being said, everything you've claimed to be "easily debunked" is founded in pretty loose logic. First of all, any point you make about using only the US is invalid. This is PC World, a magazine that is meant for a US audience. If the Washington Post complains about AT&T, are you going to turn around and say "Well, in New Zealand, things aren't so bad, so your argument sucks?"
1. Tethering
You cannot say that "it will probably come to OS4" as a valid reason as to why this is an invalid point. You cannot attack the opinion of "Android fans" as a way to debunk the valid point that as of today (yes, Froyo is trickling out /today/) Android 2.2 supports tethering while the iPhone (in the US) does not. That's not me saying 2.2 is better. I'm simply stating a fact. You also can't say "carriers will probably not support this" because anything with the word "probably" is founded in incredibly loose logic. (FTR, T-Mobile doesn't care about tethering, as I found out a while ago. I've been tethering on a rooted phone, and when we called to make sure it was okay, they were fine with it. And I sincerely doubt that they will or legally /can/ bump up everyone's data plan costs with the inclusion of this.)
2. WiFi Hotspot
Like I said, this is focusing on the US. That doesn't make it wrong- it only makes it non-applicable to you.
3. Flash
You made a poll on an /Apple fan blog/ as to whether or not iPhone owners are okay with not having Flash. The rest of your point here is mostly attacking Google and Adobe too. And just because major content providers are switching to HTML5 doesn't mean that Flash doesn't still add far more content. Adobe laid out an entire site dedicated to showing people what mobile Flash is capable of, and since it's disable-able, your battery isn't forced to take a hit. I swear, sometimes people are just really jerks when it comes to things like this. Even if you don't want Flash, having the OPTION is a benefit. How can lack of an option be a feature? That's like Microsoft listing bugs as features.
4. Open Apps
Pray tell, what security risks are you talking about now? Because I haven't heard of any security risks on the Android Market, despite the fact that you talk of them as if they're as common as an ant. I'm not going to say the iPhone doesn't have apps that can do nearly anything, but I'm also not going to sit here and say that the iPhone is "open" because of it. You are confusing openness with variety. Google will not tell me that I can't have X app. Apple will. That is the difference. Again, not complaining about Apple, complaining about this point.
5. Multitasking
A feature that I have found to be useless on both systems, but not the point. At this juncture, the iPhone does not CURRENTLY have multitasking. You cannot compare the future with the present, especially when using the phrase "very likely". It's not a proper comparison, in the same way that you can't say "my station wagon is good, but I'll probably soon have a rocket car."
6. Better browsers.
Better is an opinion, so you can debate this out yourself, but this is my favorite point. You stress so much how Android will only "eventually" have this, and now eventually isn't a proper term of measurement. Did you even read what you wrote? Because you used "eventually", "very likely", "in the near future", and "probably" more times that I thought possible. This is just hypocrisy.
7. Carriers
See above.
Calling this article punditry is a real "calling the kettle black" situation from a site that is dedicated to presenting a positive (or rather, defensive ) view on everything a company makes. I really like this site, because you report on everything Apple regardless of how minute. But this article is incredibly juvenile.
Of course, this is an Apple fan blog, so bring on the downvotes.
