Half-Life 2 console pack blushes orange

720p PS3 games downscale on older HD sets [update 1]

Nov 15th 2006 9:45PM (Joystiq)
That is NOT personal preference. 720p and 1080i have relatively equal bandwidth and there is a valid "your preference" argument between them.

480p has less than 20% as many pixels than 1080i has (do the math, I'm right). There is no contest between a 1080i signal and a 480p signal. Even given the double refresh rate, there is less than 40% of the bandwidth of 1080i. These people are getting screwed.

Does the PS3's tech specs say it has support for 1080i? Because if it does, there is a class action suit that really needs to happen.

This should have every person it affects up in arms because it is a HUGE problem, not the blowoff side issue that Joystiq makes it seem.

Sony's appeal denied; fate of dualshock uncertain [Update 1]

While I am in no way a Sony fan (www.iheartrootkit.com anyone?), I have to side with them on this one.

This is an excellent example of how ridiculous "intellectual property" law has become. Seriously, Immersion is trying to claim that they (and ONLY they) have the rights to technology involving a non-symmetric mass rotating? Have any judges ever taken a single physics course? It's based on concepts from freaking NEWTONIAN physics that are centuries old - prior art here should be trivial to establish.

If your car tires are unbalanced and setting up a vibration, you technically should have to pay them under the current laws. Heck, the earth itself isn't completely symmetric - maybe God owes them money because he set the Earth spinning.

Complete. and. utter. bullshit. This has got to stop or innovation will grind to a halt (and it isn't confined to the gaming industry, either - Microsoft I'm looking at YOU).

Just my $0.02

FFXI fans asked, creators answered

Yeah, the developer for one of the largest Japanese franchises gets up and says (paraphrased) "We have no effing clue what Sony is doing."

Sony is running scared - the mumbo jumbo and plain evasive answers they've been spouting recently mean something. My guess is that something in the box isn't working or we would have hard info by now. If Square Enix doesn't have a finalized dev box, nobody does. I wonder if it's heat, space, or the power supply? I question even Sony's ability to cram all they claim to into that chassis - I think the final PS3 will look nothing like what we have seen as of yet. "Conceptual model" indeed.

If they slip past holiday season 2006 it won't matter how good the console is, they will have lost this round.

And the truly amazing thing is, some Sony fanboy will flame the crap out of me and claim it is coming out next week a few posts down :)

Half-Life 2: Episode Two confirmed by Valve

Feb 21st 2006 5:38PM (Joystiq)
translation: Episodes One and Two were both originally slated to be released in one expansion (probably called Aftermath) but then Valve ran the numbers and figured out that episodic content will net them more cash.

I'm not a big fan of this episodic content, but I would put some money down that this is what happened. I really liked HL2, but I think I will wait until all the "Episodes" are available in a set before I buy.
