Mass Effect 3 'Extended Cut' DLC free this summer, offers 'further clarity to the ending'

Apr 5th 2012 10:34AM (Joystiq)
PoP 2008 had an ending that paved the way for a real sequel. It was actually the first game in the series that had an interesting and fresh story since the original Sands of Time.
The epilogue was poorly done and was mostly damage control. Unfortunately, as the game had flopped, they canceled development on the sequel and tried to refocus the franchise on the SoT continuity to tie in with the movie. But Forgotten Sands was a much much worse game, another flop, and I guess it really killed the franchise for a while.

Mass Effect 3 'Extended Cut' DLC free this summer, offers 'further clarity to the ending'

Yes, the ending with the child on the citadel is bad, or at least it's very generic, and not worthy of what had preceded. But it won't be fixed. By the way, as the plot was constructed, there's no way they could improve the ending by giving us another explanation or changing the choices. At one time, they had considered giving the Reapers another motive, with the expansion of dark energy in the galaxy (it caused the sun to go supernova in the Haelstrom mission for recruiting Tali in ME2) but they changed their minds. So, ME3 is already written and they couldn't introduce a potentially rich idea to conclude the game, because there are no seeds present for it in what precedes.
The real shame to my eyes was the epilogue when the Normandy crashes on a jungle, which comes out of nowhere and has a lot of continuity issues. It's at the same time too little and too much. The synthesis option is especially particularly ridiculous with the PCB drawings on the leaves. So, Shepard merged with the machines, so every organic living being could have some 80's artwork on their skin and Jocker could have sex with a steely android without it being creepy anymore???? What a conclusion!
From what I read, the endings won't be fixed anyway, there will just be some additional scenes to explain a few things and discrepancies.
But, when I watched the final scene, I had this feeling they had missed something very obvious. One the final words by Shepard was about hope and future. Instead of focusing on your old crew that supposedly meant so much to them, why didn't Bioware simply showed any character from the games giving birth just after the conclusion of ME3 to illustrate Shepard's ultimate victory. Don't show the kid, whether it is organic, synthetic or a little of both, just show a happy mother embracing the future thanks to Shepard. There were so many allusions in-game about many characters wanting to name their baby Shepard that they would all be Shepard's children anyway.

Hudson: 'Your feedback has always mattered' in Mass Effect 3, even now

@(Unverified) A game about lots of races being trapped on Earth with no relay? The base for relays is the mass effect, the very name of the franchise.

It's as if they were doing a Star Wars movie without any war.

And, no, the point of the ending of a trilogy should be closure, not a cliffhanger for a related game or DLC.

@Angry Hamster Are you sure it's Mike Tyson, not George Lucas?

@Punkrawk Bbob My main beef with AC:R is that they clearly milked the franchise too much. It's by far the weakest of the Ezio trilogy. The story isn't compelling, there are lots of disparate elements from different developer teams that feel added to pad the game (tower defense, book search, chariot chases, Animus levels), the new ideas are not that great (the zip lines), it lacks solo missions and it feels less like a natural extension of the previous entry than a stop-gap measure to give Ubi something to sell before the main team delivers a worthy sequel.
The funny thing is that I had gripes when Brotherhood was announced, fearing that it would be a worthless expansion. Then I played it and found out that they had so many good ideas for ACII that they couldn't develop all of them in time and that Brotherhood was actually the second part of a two-parter. And I was expecting Ubi to achieve the same thing with Revelations but it was more scraping the bottom of the barrel.

@am87 It might be less an excuse not to pay them than the fact some of them have a day job (especially Seth Green or Yvonne Strahovski) and couldn't get reached for a few sessions more than one year after they finished recording for ME2 and the early DLC. We don't even know who will return for ME3.

I guess that somebody at Bioware wanted to create another DLC, that they realized it would be complicated to get all the supporting cast of ME2 (including Kasumi or Zaeed) and that they decided early on to make it solo.

Russell still writing Uncharted flick, talks picks for Elena

Feb 1st 2011 9:20PM (Joystiq)
@ts8lemonade Have you still not understood that studios buy some rights for a franchise and hire famous actors because it's the usual way to get a hit?

They're making "Uncharted" into a movie simply because many people have heard of the game, the concept has box office potential and that it will allow Sony to make cross promotion between the movie and the next game. That's also why they'll hire an Amy Adams (three Oscars nominations, btw) rather than some Emily Rose, who does a fine job on the games but who doesn't have commercial appeal like Adams.

I find it quite funny that many of you don't seem to understand that the movie will never be a re-enactement of the video game with actual actors. And that's a fortunate thing. "Uncharted" is a great gaming experience but a straight adaptation would be as tedious as watching somebody else play.

What happens, and it's always the case in Hollywood, is that they'll take the basic elements of the concept, then write a movie with it. At worst, it will be one more useless movie, at best it could be a good ride with a good cast, some of the thrills of the game and some original ideas. David O. Russell is no hack and that's even a surprise he would accept such a project.

But the main thing is that the games will still exist in parallel to the movie. You won't get Mark Wahlberg modeling his face for the new game or such stupidities. It will be another continuity.

@Surfaced It will be "Agent: Hollywood". Instead of being a talented spy who spends his time in life-threatening missions, you play an obnoxious little prick who tries to get parts for his actors.
