Nexuiz brings the twitch back to FPS on XBLA

Jan 15th 2012 8:11PM (Joystiq)
The free PC version is at http://www.xonotic.org

Xonotic split from Nexuiz after this XBLA game was announced, many of the Nexuiz developers thought developing a closed-source XBLA game in secret was an abuse of their trust and a misguided continuation of the game they had worked on for years.

Worth checking out, has a lot of interesting changes and unifies Nexuiz's strange art style.

Bethesda confirms layoffs at id Software: 'Work on future id titles continues unabated'

@Hunter141072 Romero lost his job after or around Quake 1's ship date due to conflicts with Carmack. After he founded Ion Storm in 1997 and they started marketing Daikatana did the infamous "about to make you his bitch" ad come out.

Masters of Doom is a pretty awesome book.

Battlefield 3 soliciting feedback for gun attachment tweaks via Reddit thread

Jan 4th 2012 4:45PM (Joystiq)
@Dionkey I love /v/, I've been on it every day for years. But it's filled with trolling and a hatred for nearly everything. Not only that, but it's much harder to moderate a legitimate discussion on, especially when it would splinter into multiple threads.

Besides, as much as /v/ would hate to admit it, there's plenty of overlap between the two.

Play Bastion in your Chrome browser right now

@penubag There's no real source to view, NaCl content is x86 binaries compiled for the NaCl API. If you're complaining about not being able to view the store, it's because they don't want people complaining that they can't install addons in a browser that isn't Chrome.

Honestly I don't get how this is "Corporate Chrome shit". Chrome is written by the original Firefox team, it's open source (BSD licensed) and Native Client is open source and an open spec that Mozilla could freely implement if they wanted.

Doom 3 source code going free after Rage launch

Aug 5th 2011 4:06PM (Joystiq)
@JC Freeman The Dark Mod (A Thief series modification for Doom 3) has been really happy about the source release. It allows them to release the whole game as standalone, implement new features, and fix longstanding bugs.

If you own a copy of Doom 3, you should check it out here: http://www.thedarkmod.com/

If you don't, it'll probably be a full, standalone game before long. Hooray id!

Deus Ex: Human Revolution coming to OnLive, free MicroConsole and original Deus Ex with pre-order

May 19th 2011 10:03PM (Joystiq)
@BombProofGIJoe There's no subscription to use OnLive. You either buy/rent games through the service, *or* pay a flat monthly fee to get unlimited access to a set number of games (Playpack).

It's like Zune Store with Zune Pass. It makes perfect sense .

PSA: Steam Guard now available to all Steam users

@SpiderPrime Blizzard's method is to have members use the authenticator, a physical key (or mobile app) and a form of multi-factor authentication. It's a lot more secure, especially if your email address and Steam password are the same, or if your email address is the one that gets hacked.

I'd really prefer Valve go that route, I'd use it all the time.

PS3 hack court case delayed, jurisdiction questioned

Jan 18th 2011 7:21AM (Joystiq)
@Cavall Its not someone else's house, its opening up the welded-shut hood of your own car. And it's not hacking, its reverse engineering. Just as with iPhone jailbreaking, this is probably legal as an exemption to the DMCA in the United States. Everywhere else without a DMCA, this is certainly legal.

Secondly, you're playing blame the messenger here. If Geohot didn't exist, the problem wouldn't magically vanish. He didn't create anything, only discovered. This was horrible design on the part of Sony.

I'm a little interested in homebrew, not with piracy, certainly not with cheating. But I agree with Geohot because this is how the security industry works, and harming academic speech into modern security systems because "OH NOES THEYSE CHEETIN IN MY MW2" is incredibly angering and upsetting.

PS3 hack court case delayed, jurisdiction questioned

Jan 17th 2011 8:15PM (Joystiq)
@KamiKaji Guess what? It isn't his fault. Sony designed the PS3 with massive security flaws (useless hypervisor, kernel exploits, using public-key crypto without any random number blows my mind). OtherOS was the only thing keeping hackers tinkering elsewhere. When they removed it, all hell broke loose.

Putting one dude in jail for saying "Hey look guys, this is broken." is an intensely stupid idea. Not only against freedom of speech - its of incredible academic interest - but it does nothing. Someone else would have broken it, its not as if geohot made the flaws happen, they were in the system the whole time.
