Trying to buy a 360 from Wal-mart (three strikes, you're out)

Jan 31st 2007 4:50AM (Joystiq)
I used to work at Wal-Mart a long time ago, back when digital cameras were just coming out. They took back anything at my store, and sometimes it went back up on the shelf.

Oh yeah, I also returned something which I bought on a debit card, but when I checked my following bank statement, the credit never showed up. I don't shop there, anymore.

Joystiq hands-on: Mario Party 8 (Wii)

Shake the remote as fast as you can.

Let me get this straight: this is the EIGHTH game in a series, and this is as sophisticated as it gets? That's all they could think up? And there's still people in this thread saying, "that looks like fun?"

What's next? They'll make a simulation of a board game where you shake the controller to throw dice, and then the game will move the board pieces for you?

The Wii has a pointing device. Let's have some strategy games. Actually, just some "games" would be nice.

Oh, that's right. Strategy games don't appeal to people who don't actually play games, and people who don't play games are the prime audience for a game machine.

Micropayments look small, but are stacking up

It's called willpower.

Microsoft thinks Vista is the best thing since sliced bread

Jan 24th 2007 6:58PM (Joystiq)
As a programmer, I'm more interested in Vista for its underpinnings. I might get it for my testing computer (but not for my workstation until it's more mature). Unfortunately, the only people who get an OS purely for technology are Linux nuts. Windows will only sell if it, you know, has new features.

Also note that Apple doesn't sell old copies of OSX. So those of you whining that you're forced to get Vista... shut up. Buy a PC, and download any of a hundred OSes. There's your choice.

As for the people complaining about being locked in and being forced to use a platform at work, believe me, you don't know pain. My school had a love affair with Macs, and I was forced to do ALL of my work on Macs, which I despised. These were also the SUCKY Macs -- System7 -- which crashed every ten minutes and were slower than a slug crawling through the salt flats. God, I hated those machines, and I had absolutely zero choice at all. Oh yeah, and I wasn't the only one to hate those things. My whole newspaper office begged me to get PCs when we needed to update the network. Of course, the school didn't allow me to do that. I had to order everything directly from Apple.

Newly enhanced Wiimote coming this summer?

A rubberized controller would be nice. Whoever thought it'd be a great idea to design a motion sensor with a slick finish and no friction surfaces should be shot.

Presumably how you'll play Mortal Kombat on Wii

Jan 23rd 2007 3:22PM (Joystiq)
Just what I suspected: developers are forced to use motion sensors, even when they are not appropriate. Regardless of VC controller support, they must support the Wiimote.

I was under the impression that fighting games weren't meant to be so easy your grandma could do it. Ever see people play Mortal Kombat in the arcade?

Of course, people will buy it anyway, even if the end up playing it for all of 15 minutes.

Mouse gestures were also supposed to be the next big thing to make everything so easy and efficient. How long did that last? Oh, long enough for people to realize that better GUI design is more important than gestures.

Install a bigger HD in your PS3

Jan 23rd 2007 3:15PM (Joystiq)
How much of that are you going to use?

Reminds me of all the people that bought 2GB cards for their Wii, without having any clue how much space downloads actually require. Some people love to waste money.

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup: stuck in WoW edition

Brown and Bloom should be outlawed on all nine planets... I mean, eight.

I voted for Digital Unrest, though. Why didn't someone think of that sooner? :)

The 360 is a zombie, complete with pale, uninteresting white skin and an occasional glowing red eye.

XBLA Today: Heavy Weapon

At least XBLA games have demos.
