One question though... which one has nastier mobs? WoW or Rifts? I mean in Rift can an open world mob actually kill me?

THQ extends Warhammer 40K licensing deal

Apr 27th 2011 12:57AM (Joystiq)
Good, at least Games Workshop aren't doing their typical act of finding something that works well and shooting it in the head. THQ has done a better job of bringing out the flavor and awesome of 40k than GW most of the time.

Now if only they'd outsource their tabletop game rules to someone who knows what they're doing, like Fantasy Flight maybe.

Drama Mamas: What to do after inappropriate chat between wife and guildie

Apr 22nd 2011 2:26PM (WoW)
Wife definitely isn't blameless, but the other idiot needs to be booted, simply because it's 2 vs. 1. That's what you get when you mess around with someone else's significant other, so don't ask to be treated fairly.

All in all, the biggest piece of advice, take a break from WoW and see to your marriage. Stuff like this has huge repercussions down the line, trust issues and so forth that will persist for much longer than you expect. Take it seriously. See a marriage councilor, whether you think you need to or not. WoW right now is the least of your worries.

Shifting Perspectives: Tanks, bribes, and player behavior, part 2

New category: Those of us who play at odd hours and though we have great guildies, don't get to play with them during the week. So we're left at the mercy of the RDF. God help us.

The cross server RDF has huge advantages. For folks who play at odd times it means we actually get a chance to do some dungeons. If it was server only, we'd probably never see dungeons except on weekends. I dearly, dearly love cross server queuing.

On the other hand it has exposed the worst parts of the WoW community, as many people said it would.

I agree that reputation and accountability are needed. That's the problem right now. I think a cross server or queue preferences list would solve that.

Similar to X-Box live, you should be able to 'ignore' somebody and never be grouped with them again. This should also be by account. No making alts to get out of your just reward for being a jackass.

You should also be able to mark somebody as preferred and have a higher chance of ending up in a group with them.

This takes quite a bit of work on Blizzard's part, but I don't see why it can't be done. E.g. Microsoft managed to do it.

This will over time make it so that being a jerk gives you a much longer queue as more and more people add you to their 'don't group' lists. It will bring back some modicum of reputation and accountability.

Well due to the hours I keep, while I have an awesome guild, I don't get to play with them often, so I'm left using the RDF. I also fell in love with thanking in Cata and pretty much for the reasons you mentioned. Enjoyed it right up to my first few heroics and had almost the exact same experiences you mentioned.

DPS abusing you for trying to be professional about things and generally being unmitigated tards.

Personally though I still love tanking and I still do it. I even tank at least one normal every day even though I don't need to, because I figure it's helping some folks to get an instance in that they normally wouldn't.

It also means though that I'm very, very quick to drop a group if they look like tards. I'll put up with folks that are new. I don't mind explaining fights or marking or CC. I do NOT put up with jerks or 'gogogo'. First time somebody starts being a jerk, I vote to kick, if it doesn't go through, I leave. A 15 minute break won't kill me and it's insta-pop after that.

You have to have a very thick skin to keep tanking pugs in cata. Nothing against you if you don't want to develop one. It shouldn't be a requirement.

Faltor's experience mirrors mine. I'm in an oceanic timezone, but I play on a West Coast timezone server. That means I'm playing in everyone on my battlegroup's mornings. I've gotten some absolutely awesome pugs. Full of literate, well spoken people who don't go off the deep end at the odd wipe. In fact we have fewer wipes any way. I've met a large number of people I wish I could add to my friend list.

This contrasts horribly to weekends or days I'm running the equivalent of early afternoons. I've gotten to the point where I simply don't tank during those times. Pretty much every negative experience has happened then.

I'm not saying age is the be-all end all gauge of competence, but right now it's looking to be the most consistent one.
