The Daily Grind: Is free-for-all PvP a dealbreaker?

Jun 4th 2011 10:32AM (Massively)
Yes, it it. For a few reasons:

1 - It establishes a pay-to-win mentality, in which cash shop purchases make the difference in victory or defeat. Biggest credit line from Mommy wins. Almost no FFA PvP games avoid this.

2 - It strips victims of their achievements in many games, costing them gear or xp, that they earned through actually playing the game rather than being a sociopath.

3 - Inevitably, the sociopaths get ganked by a better ganker, and whine for nerfs. The real game is then negatively affected by a constant stream of patches to try and "balance" gear, classes, and races.

4 - Games that focus on PvP inevitably suck, lacking any semblance of lore, or content worth doing. It's always "kill 5 fozzles/collect 5 widgets/mailman" type quests. There's no searching throguh a fog-enshrouded dock-side community, digging for evidence of a serial killer living nearby.

If you want PvP, games such as Call of Duty exist. There (at least in the good CoD games, like the original, and it's expansion, though the rest of them suck), it's 100% player skill on a good server. Then again, the same ones who think they're so great at PvP in FFA MMOs end up not being able to remotely compete in twitch-based games, so they need that cash shop build to succeed. They'd never make it where it actually took skill, not just hiding until a player half their level and no gear wanders by and then jumping them.

Opinion: Time to raise the speed limit, how does 150 MPH sound?

Apr 12th 2011 4:44AM (Autoblog)
I'd not want to be the automaker who uses microsoft to develop their software that controls that!

Texas House approves nation's fastest speed limit at 85 mph

55mph was the most efficient speed to drive at.... in 1974 when everyone drove soft-sprung bricks with large-displacement engines backed by 3 and 4 speed transmissions geared for acceleration.

Aerodynamics and transmissions, as well as fuel delivery and combustion, have improved since then.

Texas House approves nation's fastest speed limit at 85 mph

I did an experiment a few weeks ago, in which I drove 60mph instead of my usual 70 to and from work. I have a very early commute, so traffic is, at it's worst, light. Even in the afternoon, I'm on the road right after the main lunch rush is over with.

My 35mpg car continued to get 35mpg average. The same variance as it shows in my log book, which has nearly 2 years of mpg figures (and fuel costs) written down. This week will be lower, since I think I got some water in my tank when I got gas during a severe storm monday.

Considering that my car is geared poorly, having a 2400rpm torque peak yet 65mph (the local limit on the highway) has the engine turning at 3000rpm (the automatic version turns at 2400rpm at the same speeds). This with a 6 speed manual. I still beat out the auto version, which my mom drives. She averages 31-32mpg, with a 34 peak. Mine is 34-35 average, with a 37 peak.

Report: Jeep to build subcompact by 2013?

Mar 6th 2011 12:01PM (Autoblog)
Rowfive: Those army Jeeps had a 3 speed manual transmission, which was geared for torque, not fuel economy or high speed running. They also had flathead engines, which while they did have a lot of low-end grunt, they ran out of breath quickly.

A modern Jeep of that size would use a high revving DOHC L4 and a 6 speed transmission, and possibly a diesel in Europe at least. Which would mean it'd have no problems running up to 90mph, and getting reasonable fuel economy. It would also *gasp* be designed to meet safety and emissions standards.

Don't be an idiot, no one said they were going to dust off the old Go-Devil and 3 speed gear box and stick it into a bare bones, designed-for-war MB from 1941. It will be a new design, hopefully one that harkens back to that tradition, but not a complete copy of that design.

Notice that there's a black and a blue one? They did this to two of those poor cars.

Yeah, hopefully they'll be going out of business soon. Given how they burn their cash on crap like this, I don't doubt that they are heading out.

Development on next-gen Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon underway?

Or at least 1950's standards. Currently, the Canyon/Colorado is a dog. I test drove one, with the thought of buying it. Walked away very quickly.

Chicago 2011: 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

Feb 9th 2011 4:31AM (Autoblog)
Displacement /= weight. Displacement is simply how much air an engine can push into the cylinders; it has nothing to do with the physical size. This engine is actually lighter than the old LA series 318 (5.2l) inch engine. And a hell of a lot more powerful.

GM builds large-displacement V8s which are lighter than most V6's from competing makes. A LS series swap into a MX5 actually only adds 100 lbs, mostly over the rear of the car, and doesn't significantly affect handling.

The old SRT8 actually wasn't too bad on fuel, when you consider it's 425hp and 4200lb curb weight. So with cylinder shut off, this should get better, particularly around town and cruising at highway speeds. Once they get rid of the Mercedes garbage 5 speed, the thing will probably match the old R/T's fuel economy.
