New Games This Month: Sept. 2008

Sep 2nd 2008 8:26PM (Joystiq)
What about Mount&Blade? http://www.taleworlds.com

It's releasing on September 16 in North America and September 19 in Europe. License keys for the digital download version are available now at a slightly reduced price (due to it still being in beta).

Between Mount&Blade, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, and Crysis Warhead I've got a lot of gaming to do this month. Spore looks promising too, but I won't be buying it outright until I see how it fares. I'd be interested in The Force Unleashed too, but I've always played Star Wars games on the PC; the lack of a PC version is a slap in the face to long-time LucasArts customers.

CE-Oh no he didn't, part XXXVIII: Peter Moore tells Sony it's failing

The PS3's problem is the lack of games. Once that picks up sales will too.

Not to say a $100 price drop wouldn't help matters, but even with the price aside there are many who would pick the 360 because it has more shooters and, laughably, a roughly equal number of RPGs.

1UP editors: Wii got punk'd

Nov 13th 2006 5:32PM (Joystiq)
That's just cruel. I love it.

Where/how did they get/make the wiimote, though? That would be hard to fake, especially as some of these guys will have actually held one.

I'm amazed the guy playing MPH was fooled for even a second. The first thing I'd do with a wiimote in a shooter (even if I had tried it at E3) is test the trigger a bit, which in this case wouldn't work, which means it's instantly bogus.

As others have said, the racing was the best for this prank since they're being led to believe they're basically babysitting the controller while the car drives forwards. The natural tendency to tilt the controller when playing racing games makes oversteering all the more believable.

PlayStation 3 launch window titles announced

Four? Wait, let me count that again. Yes, four. Four games I can't get anywhere else. Untold Legends Dark Kingdom sounds interesting, but it's not going to make or break the system. Ridge Racer and Full Auto are racing which I'm not keen on, and I haven't played a Gundam game since the SNES.

So, overall, the PS3 has NOTHING to offer me but ports? People called the Xbox 360 launch weak, but at least they had exclusives.

Bored moron tortures Xbox 360 Customer Support

What's the point of posting this? It's not even funny! And the tech support guy totally owned him at the end.

PS3's Oblivion will come to Xbox 360 and PC too

Oct 13th 2006 5:11AM (Joystiq)
You could read the interview yourself for the answer. All he says is that they intend to let all systems enjoy it. He only says why, not how or when.

I would assume that the content would be either standard DLC or else part of an expansion and/or Game of the Year Edition (like Morrowind). It could be Beth will do something like the Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack, of course.

PS3 Oblivion content will hit 360 too

Oct 13th 2006 3:31AM (Joystiq Xbox)
I don't know that the 360 will get the PS3 tweaks, at least not yet. Bloodmoon and Tribunal gave Morrowind some extra interface refinements (map markers, better journal design, etc.), but those were only available with those expansions. I'd say if Beth does give the 360 these graphical tweaks it will be as part of the expansion (assuming there is one).

However the PS3's graphical prowess may amount to nothing. Blu-Ray discs spin slower, therefore theoretically hampering attempts to improve streaming. Beth aren't known for well-optimised code, either; Morrowind still runs badly on PCs that can run Half-Life 2 and the like smoothly.

These graphical tweaks won't be very effective cannon fodder if the PS3's non-unified content service prevents Beth from delivering DLC to players. For all the Xbox/360's faults (alleged or genuine), Live is a real winner.

Of course MS had time to perfect it when developing the Internet Gaming Zone. Live is clearly its spiritual successor: lobbies, ladders, gametype servers, simple arcade-style games--all have been present in the Zone's service since around 1998, and all Microsoft games provided full support for all applicable features.

Sony adopting Xfire was a good move (since they have no previous experience outside the PS2's shoddy online support), but making it non-unified wasn't. Xfire is solid enough to build a viable Live alternative from if they made it unified and evolved its codebase. As it is, the vague grab-bag of implementation options presented to third-party developers may make or break their online support.

Poll results: What genre do you enjoy most?

Ah, but are those RPG votes to do with Japanese, Western or Massive?

Putting those three together is like merging sports and racing. Each is so different from the other two.
