APB's Dave Jones expected mediocre reviews

Jul 3rd 2010 11:50AM (Massively)
I guess the game is buggy (voice chat never seems to work right for me, for example), but I've been playing 3-4 hours a day for the last week and haven't any wall hacks, have never had trouble with underpopulated zones and haven't had any issues with the driving or shooting. The game is a blast and the mission and match making systems mean I always have a fight to look forward to. Like, I'm reading most of your comments and thinking, "Damn, the game they're talking about sucks. Glad I'm not playing that and I'm playing APB instead."

I guess local conditions can do a lot to change your opinion, or something.

Massively's hands-on look at Rift: Planes of Telara

Aren't rifts just PQS that move? How does that change the world? Rift goes away the change does to don't it?

Looks badass tho. I just don't get how its new.

As an avid EQ2 and WoW player I think I can safely call shenanigans on the "looks like those games" statement. The screenshots look WAY better than either of those games, ever did.

Cascading population drops the true MMO killer

You know, sounds silly, but why tell your player you merged at all? Why not just keep all the old server names on the server select page and point the old names to the merged servers? ;)

OK, that's a bit absurd, but is the point so invalid? If people are so afraid of bad news, why tell them? It's not like a server merge actually makes the game worse, so why worry them with it?

The death penalty and you

@Colin: Yeah, that's true, though the guy does mention that the AoC debuff is pretty light. Still, back when I was a 10th level Herald of Xotli that stupid kill Renton quest kicked my ass until I was 14th level. I couldn't get my tombstones back from that fight to save my soul, so I get what he's saying. it wasn't a big deal though, I just left 5 stones there and wandered off. after that I just hunted in underhalls until I'd leveled enough to take that fight.

Uh, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Foundation 9 own Shiny? And for that matter, doesn't Interplay own MDK and Earthworm Jim? Or did I accidentally fall back into 1998, again?

I hate it when that happens.

Is single-player content hurting MMORPGs?

Nov 12th 2007 6:46PM (Massively)
Yeah, sorry... Solo-friendly MMOs are just better.

Anyone play Neocron? It was a tiny (I suppose it still is, it's technically still around, I think) MMO and even a compelling one but it had a fatal flaw that literally killed it: Literally every system was designed with the idea that any given player would always have a community of other players to rely on, be it to help them craft, upgrade their player, adventure with or even to complete missions against (it featured PVP). When the player base dwindled beyond the necessary critical mass to sustain basic services like gear repair, the few remaining players basically left en masse for more solo friendly MMOs.

I'll give up those allegedly tighter knit communities to prevent death by group-centric design, any day.
