Caustic Graphics develops ray tracing at gaming speeds

Mar 13th 2009 1:22PM (Engadget)
Not sure, but I'd like to know if this has any impact on how we do collision detection. With normal rasterization, you have to calculate intersections yourself. However, with hardware accelerated raytracing, I would imagine doing ray/poly hit testing would be blazingly fast. I wonder if collision detection algorithms would degenerate into the exact same code as the rendering engine.

Samsung Omnia review

Aug 18th 2008 1:37PM (Engadget Mobile)
My main problem with Omnia and Touch: Can we not have to shell out $700+ for these? With new activation, an iPhone is $200. I expect the same kind of deal from AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon.

Intel discusses ATI and Nvidia killing Larrabee, launching as early as 2009

Cost? Heat/Form Factor? 10 years ago, you'd pay $300 for top of the line in gaming graphics. Now you pay a grand. 10 years ago, the most powerful card took 1 slot. Now, it takes 2 slots and requires a top-of-the-line power supply.

I want to see some sanity in the PC gaming graphics market.

I can't wait to see what he's got. As a mobile game developer, I worship this guy. Teach us, oh Carmack, how to squeeze perf from this device...

How would you change MSI's Wind?

I'd improve the cpu, storage, battery life, form factor, display, usability, and price. You can cut&paste this into every "how would you improve..." article.

Zune Guy fed up with Zune, seeks to cover up tattoos

I have yet to find a reason to cover up my COBY MP-200 tattoo on my forehead. COBY is the bomb!!

Maglev wind turbines 1000x more efficient than normal windmills

Oh great, now we'll have to import our cheap *energy* from China as well.

Zune people: we hear you, expect more coverage soon

Yeah, most of us understand perfectly that this is a blog that allows highly opinionated points of views posted by its loyal readers. What's your point?

The new Zune: better than before, but not quite good enough

Nov 13th 2007 3:26PM (Engadget)
What an unprofessional review! This "review" glosses over the real improvements to this line of products that make them compelling. Really, I was the first to laugh at the horrible Zune 30 (as it's now called) and pretty much gave up on Zune. This revamp somewhat surpasses my expectations (not hugely, but still) and actually has me wanting one.

So far, based on what I've read, my only gripes are:

1. The Zune 4/8 should be the Zune 8/16
2. The flash zunes should have bigger screens and less black bevel.
3. The Marketplace should get movie rentals (but that's not a device issue)
4. Should support streaming music to media extenders.
