Verizon says original Droid 'doesn't have the hardware' to support a mobile hotspot

Aug 2nd 2010 3:11PM (Engadget)
@Plazmic Flame

Name me one carrier anywhere that gives you tethering without charging extra for it.

Unofficial tethering solutions(IE wifi tether, easytether, pdanet, etc) don't count.

The only way I've ever gotten tethering for free, from any carrier, is by doing things that are most likely terms of service violations.

I'm not saying that Verizon is justified in saying this, as it's clearly not true, or at least not a whole truth, but like it or not, carriers will charge for tethering for as long as they can, because it's a feature that costs them more money.
Once I started tethering my data usage went up by between two and five times, and I was already a heavy data user.

There's the possibility that what they mean is the droid can't create a "genuine" wifi network, as what all the rooted ones are doing is creating an adhoc wireless network. But I could be wrong.

BlackBerry 6's WebKit-based browser bests the competition in a good 'ol standards showdown

@nickcraze

It's a standards test, not a speed test.
A good score merely indicates that a browser supports a lot of HTML5 features. It could do so yet also be very slow.
However, a browser doing very badly at this test would be a good reason to ridicule it, especially if it's a browser like IE that's also just not very fast.

@makk

It's just taking the Pre longer because it has 1/10th the hackers, so it seems more impressive.

Not that surprising, considering the Droid with the same SOC can hit 1.3ghz.

When you blow a 3.5 inch screen of a portable gaming system up to a 25 foot projector screen, you're right, that does look bad!
What were they thinking?

Try setting your monitor down to 320x240 for an equivalent effect. But you know what, that was standard for a 3" phone screen for some time.
