Actually, it kind of is. In the Mario Bros. game, Mario wore a blue cap with a blue and red color scheme. The overalls in the Brawl pic appear to be a dark red and they may have been basing it of the Mario Bros. sprite.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't BOTH of those titles being developed as GameCube games anyway? (I know for a fact SPM was, not sure about Kirby)
