Grammy-winning Up composer got his break in video games

Feb 3rd 2010 2:25AM (Joystiq)
I love Giacchino's stylistic range. He did 60s-style spy music in The Incredibles, Parisian street jazz in Ratatouille, Space Opera in Star Trek, epic war themes in Medal of Honor, Cloverfield's monster movie overture, and the bizarre post-post-modern Lost themes, along with some of the most heartrendingly beautiful music ever in a movie in Up. Most composers would kill to do just one of those styles as well as he does. It's also worth noting that his score for Up was nominated for the Best Score Oscar today, and that it already won the same Golden Globe.

Joyswag: Jonathan Coulton's latest CD / DVD 'Best. Concert. Ever.'

I'd love to run an independent arcade, and one that's not just full of light gun games and crappy ticket games. Or an independent used game store.

Castle Crashers patch still without release date

Sep 5th 2008 6:52PM (Joystiq)
You realize that they really only have one programmer, right?

When a developer has a 100-person team, it's very easy to get that patch out in two days. Fulp has to go through three years' worth of code essentially by himself, find the buggy network code (which was clearly not a problem in their test environments, meaning they have to try and use a live, unalterable game to find the problem).

Just play in local co-op until the patch. The game is totally awesome, and if you honestly think that this amazing game––even with only local co-op––isn't worth the $15 when you'll gladly pay $60 for the latest broken generic FPS just because it's on a disc, I don't really care about your complaints.

Namco not spinning any Tales outside of Japan

Apr 10th 2008 10:26PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I know it's tempting to say "boycott Namco" and get enraged, but this is a critical moment if you want to see this game. Start getting in contact with Namco-- via email and/or telephone-- and telling them that you want this game. Showing a little demand can go a long way. Talk to Namco of Japan, Namco of America, and Namco of Europe if possible-- any localization period and you can import it with region-free games. Spread this news to the world of gaming and help create that demand yourself.

More importantly, don't get angry and say "I'm not buying the other Tales games now." That's just stupid. High sales numbers mean they're more likely to bring the game out here. Don't get it secondhand; pre-order it, and get all of your friends to buy it, too! Low sales numbers for the last GBA game are probably the biggest factor in this decision right now.

It sucks. I know from Mother 3. But we can learn important lessons from it. Companies are not out to piss you off (unless you're an EarthBound fan, hehe), they just don't think there's demand. If you want this game, the best you can do is show them that there IS demand, not pout in the corner.

Game Crazy owner facing massive financial problems

Aug 17th 2007 1:15PM (Joystiq)
Yeah, I absolutely love GameCrazy and would be really disappointed if they went out of business or (worse!) got bought out by GiantStop corp.

They've been dropping like flies around here, and I only know of 2 still open, about 30-45min away. Even so, I make the effort to drive out there when there's something I want that nobody else has (i.e. DS lite on day one, SNES games, Dreamcast games, etc.) or when they have one of their AMAZING 3 for $15 sales on their entire retro library. It's really one of the few places (if not the only place) around here to get classic games, even if the rarer RPGs and AAA games aren't in that often. We have one local retro games store, but they don't get shipments of new games, and they overprice like hell since GameCrazys and other classic stores are so few and far between. GC gives great trade-in values-- I got a DS lite for $60 with my DS fatty. They often take MORE than $5 off of used games, their prices drop more quickly than GS or Target, and they're one of the few places that actually competes with GS for the gamer crowd. Some people think the atmosphere is ghetto, but I like it-- it's a refreshing change from EB/GS's drab, boring, corporate crap. The people have been nothing but friendly, and I love love LOVE that they'll let you try ANY open game if they have the system for it working (which is most of them). Basically, I'd go there all the time if there was one nearby... though, no gamestores are within 25 minutes of my house, anyway...

Save the Open Apple key (or should we?)

Ack, sorry, this font doesn't support the Apple symbol. That's what the s are in my last post.

Save the Open Apple key (or should we?)

Aug 16th 2007 8:26PM (TUAW.com)
They were originally going to use the  icon instead of the swirly command thingy, but Jobs stepped in, saying it was unprofessional to slap the logo around on all the menus, and that it looked busy. The cmd icon was actually the result of a frantic attempt to find a replacement, and the  icon was kept on because of the original plan.
