Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters review: Limited learning

Mar 29th 2011 6:08PM (Joystiq)
I agree. I read this article to determine if I should be more interested in purchasing this game than I am now. However, I wasn't able to learn much about the gameplay from this article. If I had a little more interest I'd now go to another site to read a full review. However, I'll just disregard this game altogether. Maybe that is the objective of this article. Then again, it was given 4/5 stars...

Check out Epic's Unreal Engine GDC tech demo (while you can)

Ya, pre-rendered scenes don't impress me.

Nokia Nuron for T-Mobile review

Mar 22nd 2010 11:33PM (Engadget)
@B3astofthe3ast ya I read about the hacked version; it isn't a nav system if it doesn't tell you the street names or have voice navigation. It's just a goofy version of google maps from what I can tell.

Nokia Nuron for T-Mobile review

@Edobe Only in the USA. I mentioned that I am in Canada. Regardless, Ovi Maps is still the best free nav software as it also operates offline.

Hell, I may keep my 5800 around just as wifi/media/gps device.

Nokia Nuron for T-Mobile review

Mar 22nd 2010 12:35AM (Engadget)
I've been using a 5800 for the past 3 months and within the last month I upgraded to firmware to version 40. It made a huge difference and made the phone a lot more pleasant to use compared to the original version that shippied with it (21). Reading Engadget's original review of the 5800 they would have had version 21 as well and I can understand their 'dissapointment' with it.

I actually really like the form factor of the 5800/5230; it may be chunky but it isn't very wide and fits great in my hand and pocket. I do really hate the 2.5mm charging port though; brutal.

Battery life is decent I suppose; if you do some browsing and listening to music it will probably last 6 hours or so. Very little use and it will last a few days. However, doing heavy browsing and using a lot of applications including GPS, Bluetooth and Wifi may only get you a couple hours.

Ovi Maps is an excellent application. In Canada there is nothing that can compete with it for the price (free).

Regardless, I did just buy a Nexus One but I think I'll be missing the free nav software.

Smartphone GPS shootout: Google, Ovi, and Verizon go head-to-head

Feb 25th 2010 12:15PM (Engadget)
Man, its articles like this that make me wish there were folks in Canada that would do this kind of testing.

Obviously Google Nav and the Verizon offering don't apply to me (I have a Nokia 5800 and love the Ovi Maps) but there are other offerings, for example Telus has a subscription service that I would assume is similar to Verizon's and is one option to use on the Motorola Milestone here.

In reality it would seem that Ovi Maps really is the best option as a navigation device. There will be many instances where you will not have cell coverage and require navigation, mostly because you're probably lost and your GPS would be your only lifeline. This makes Ovi Maps the only software that turns your phone in to an actual GPS device. For some reason I thought Google Nav could store map information locally and not require a data connection but I was wrong.

I read about this tonight and am switching my service over to Telus tomorrow.

Gateway's DVD-playin' EC14D netbook spotted in the wild

Jan 28th 2010 6:16PM (Engadget)
Why do they keep reporting that this is a netbook? It has a ULV CPU (not atom) and now a DVD drive. Gateway already has an EC18 (which I have) that is almost exactly the same as this but without the DVD drive; I think it is an absolutely amazing laptop. These EC series gateways are the same as the Acer Timeline 1410/1810 as well.

Not a netbook, it's an ultra-portable.

Ask Engadget HD: What's the best universal remote available right now?

Jan 20th 2010 3:02PM (Engadget HD)
I'd actually say the Harmony 890 Pro. If you end up with a distributed AV system (all of your gear in a rack with matrix switchers to output to multiple rooms) then the 890 Pro can be used in each room. There is one 890 Pro designated as master and it keeps track of the state of all the equipment and the remotes. So, if a remote in room 1 has turned a cable box off and a remote in room 2 requests the same off command, the master 890 will know that the cable box is already off and not permit the room 2 remote from sending the command again (which could turn the box back on). The 890 Pro is RF and comes with the IR blaster thing that would be installed in a rack or cabinet.

I do believe that the 890 Pro is discontinued though and that same functionality doesn't exist in any of the current Harmony remotes.

ZAGGbox media center / streamer now available for pre-order

Jan 15th 2010 5:36PM (Engadget)
@Bahndit Why can't it just delay the recording by building up a buffer and transcode that buffer? I assume the transcoding is hardware based so the buffer could be on the order of seconds or less.
